James Elwood Strawsburg, 76, of Thurmont, Maryland passed away on July 31, 2018 at Tranquility of Fredericktowne. He was the husband of Dorothy Strawsburg and they recently celebrated their 30th anniversary.
Born July 11, 1942 in Woodsboro, Maryland, he was the son of Harold Kenneth and Ruth Frances (Moser) Strawsburg. Jim was the youngest of four children.
He graduated from Walkersville High School, class of 1960. Jim was a life-long fisherman and hunter and enjoyed every sport involving a ball. In high school he ran track, played baseball, basketball, and soccer. After high school he added tennis, golf, and skiing. He was a part of the WHS basketball team that won the State Championship in 1960.
In the 1970’s began going every year to Canada fishing with a group of guys. Over the years participants changed but there was a core group that included: Phil Yost, Dick Krantz, Harry Crum, and Jerry Crum.
Following high school he enlisted in the Navy with the hopes of using the GI Bill to help with a college education. The Navy gave him a medical discharge at boot camp due to his long history of asthma. He returned home and began work at Bowers’ Lumber yard where he helped design kitchens. After 9 years there he was offered employment at Richard F. Kline Inc. and worked there for 33 years. As a high school graduate he headed the Estimating department overseeing civil engineers. He moved on to C.J. Miller and finished his career at Dewey Jordan.
He and his wife are members of Frederick Church of the Brethren.
In addition to his wife, Dorothy, he is survived by his two daughters: Lori Shuff (Kevin) of Walkersville and Rebecca Strawsburg of Spring Ridge; two step-sons: John Hart (Warin) of South Carolina and William Hart (Ora) of Virginia. There are 4 grandchildren: Mason Jahnke and Aaron Jahnke and Ethan Hart and Elizabeth Hart.
He is also survived by his sister, Doris Diehl of Manchester, Maryland and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his two brothers Edgar and Harold Strawsburg.
A celebration of his life will be held at 11 o’clock on Saturday, August 18, 2018 at the Frederick Church of the Brethren, 201 Fairview Avenue, Frederick, Md. 21701. Refreshments will follow the service.
