Mr. James I. Spalding, 75, of Thurmont passed away peacefully Monday, May 19, 2014 at his home. He was the loving husband of Ellen L. Sutton Spalding for 23 years.
Born January 23, 1939 in Thurmont, he was the son of the late Charles "Hamp" Spalding and Helen M. Gourley Spalding.
James served in the United States Air Force before working for the Maryland State Highway as a maintenance Foreman for 34 years. He was a member of Trinity United Church of Christ. He was a life member and past Post Commander of AMVETS Post 7, Thurmont. James also was a member of the American Legion Post 121, Emmitsburg, South Mountain Rod and Gun Club, and Guardian Hose Co., Thurmont. He also enjoyed butchering and cooking for family and friends.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Mary Mahoney and husband, Michael, of Fairfield, PA, and Kathryn Hovermale and husband, Keith, of Thurmont; his grandson, James Austin Hovermale of Thurmont; his brothers, Donald L. Spalding and wife, Joan, of Thurmont, and Charles E. Spalding, also of Thurmont; nieces, Diane M. Miller and husband, Randy, and Lisa Campbell and husband, Todd, and their daughter, Katy; and a nephew, Mark Spalding and wife, Debi, and their children Lydia and Hayden.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, May 22, 2014 at Stauffer Funeral Homes, P.A., 104 E. Main Street, Thurmont. Services will begin at 10 a.m. on Friday, May 23 from the funeral home.
Interment will be private.
