James E. Small, 80, of Thurmont, Maryland died Friday July 11, 2014 at Julia Manor, Hagerstown Maryland.
Mr. Small was preceded in death by his mother, Pearl Stull Small and father, George W. Small.  He is a native of Thurmont and a member of the Church of the Brethren.
Mr. Small graduated from Washington Township High School in 1952 where he lettered in football.  While a member of the Blue Ridge Summitt Volunteer Fire Department, he was recognized in 1954 for heroism by the United States Army for the rescue to two small children from a burning building.
He was a veteran of the Korean War, having served in the United States Army.
Mr. Small celebrated 29 years of sobriety prior to his death. He served as a sponsor and mentor to many in the Alcoholics Anonymous program, and considered them as part of his family.
He is survived by his daughter Debra Small of Biglerville, Pennsylvania, his son James Small of Greeneville, Tennessee, his grandson Captain Alexander Small of Fort Stewart, Georgia, and two sisters Margaret Brown and Patricia Trostel.
Per Mr. Small’s wishes, there will not be a service.  The family requests that donations be made to the charity, A Grand Mother’s Prayer which provides assistance to abused women and their children.  Donations can be made in Mr. Small’s name to the Church of the Brethren, 14 North Altamont Avenue, Thurmont, Maryland, 21788.
