James Steven Porter

James Steven Porter (Jim), 63, of Frederick, MD passed away Sunday, October 29, 2023 from cancer.  Jim is survived by his wife of 33 years, Barbara (Molter) Porter, son Brian Carr and daughter Brandi (George) Meese; grandchildren Zachary Carr and Lorelie Bridgham; siblings Lynda (John) Nugent, Charles (Kathleen) Porter, Kathleen Sillick, Carol (Robert) Berman, and Timothy Porter as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends who Jim considered family.  Jim was predeceased by his parents, Charles A. and Jane C. Porter, and brother David Lawrence Porter.
Jim met Barbara on June 16, 1989 through dear friends.  It was love at first sight and they wed one year later on June 16, 1990.  They traveled to Ireland for their honeymoon, surprising Jim’s parents there.  Jim’s employment took them south to Maryland where they made their home.  Throughout their happy marriage they were famous for slow dancing to fast tunes and fast dancing to slow tunes.  Surrounded by wonderful neighbors and friends, they have felt great support thru Jim’s illness.  Both Jim and Barbara made lifelong friends easily.  Barbara is grateful for their constant support at this time.
Jim’s career began in technology and he worked his way up in telecommunications to Senior Director, Finance & FP&A Business Development. He worked for various companies including; GTE, Verizon, Comsource, Globe Com, Protechnic, and Ultisat.
Jim loved and appreciated all kinds of music and particularly enjoyed his time as a drummer in middle school and beyond.  Jim was an avid golfer who enjoyed playing on leagues and with friends. His special rules with friends were “hit ‘till you’re happy” and “complementary pars for all”.  Jim enjoyed exotic cars, Formula One, Indy Car, and all forms of auto racing. He loved and drove his Kawasaki LTD 1000 cross country. He helped update and customize Brandi, Brian, and Zachary’s vehicles. There wasn’t anything Jim didn’t understand or couldn’t fix. He was known for generously, quietly, and humbly helping others.
Jim and Barbara enjoyed traveling with many trips up and down the east coast and in particular to the family cottage on Page Lake, sharing in the antics of family and friends.
Jim was proud of his Irish heritage, deeply touched by Ireland’s natural beauty and culture.  Following in his parent’s footsteps, he and Barbara traveled extensively across Ireland visiting many friends and family.
Above all these things, Jim loved his beloved wife and best friend Barbara. They knew each other’s thoughts: they were inseparable.  Together they shared, in strength, all of life’s joys and sorrows.
Jim’s family are deeply indebted to all the doctors and medical providers who directed his care over the past 4 years in particular Dr. Yun Oh, MD.
Jim will be sweetly remembered and sorely missed by all who had the good fortune to meet him.
