James Michael McCoy, 53, of Middletown went home to be with his Heavenly Father on June 2, 2013.
Michael was born on March 2, 1960 in Morgantown, West Virginia, the son of the late James Lloyd McCoy and Anna Walters Stewart.
Michael was married to the love of his life, Elisa (Stanton) McCoy on November 15, 1983 in Loveland, Colorado, and they immediately began building a legacy of laughter and love for their family, welcoming their beloved daughters, Emily and Elizabeth in 1986 and 1989, respectively. Michael adored “his girls”, all three of them, and their family life centered on their faith and their love for one another and for others.
Michael attended Shepherd University, West Virginia University, and Colorado State University and he spent the majority of his career in custom millwork design. He was truly gifted as a millwork project and design manager and had a creative spirit, reflected not only in his professional work, but also as evidenced inside and outside the family home. A walk around the family property reflects Michael’s love for nature and for creating beauty, a gift he gave his family.
Michael put family above all else, and enjoyed each day with them as a grand adventure. He loved the outdoors, gardening, camping, lending a helping hand to those in need, and serving the community around him. He was a very active member of First Baptist Church of Frederick, where he served as a Youth Group Leader, Small Group Leader, Missions Team Member, and Trustee.
Michael had a servant’s heart, participating in a great deal of mission work, work in which he found great joy.
In addition to his wife, Elisa, Michael is survived by his daughters, Emily McCoy Bish, of Frederick (married to Patrick E. Bish), and Elizabeth McCoy, of Middletown (soon to be married to Austen J. Mathews); grandson, Alexander Bish; siblings, Michelle Reed Bassett, Kevin Bassett, Matthew McCoy, Trish McCoy, David McCoy, Laura McCoy, Raegan McCoy, Tiffany McCoy, Tara McCoy, Traci McCoy, Kellie Stanton Reed, Michael Reed, Edward Stanton Jr., and Shannon Apperson Stanton. Also surviving are his father- and mother-in-law, Edward J. Stanton Sr. and Barbara Hartsell Stanton; grandmother, Elizabeth Walker; 17 nieces and nephews; 4 great-nieces and nephews; and many other family and friends.
In addition to his parents, Michael was preceded in death by a brother, Dwight Reed, and his grandparents, Glenn and Florence Walters; Daniel and Virginia McCoy.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, June 6, from 6-7pm at First Baptist Church of Frederick, 7040 Bowers Road, Frederick, MD 21702. A celebration of life service will take place at 7pm with the Rev. Dr. Larry L. Eubanks officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Michael’s memory to the Missions Fund at First Baptist Church of Frederick. Michael’s family wishes to thank the many friends and family members who have offered prayers, love, and support.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by Stauffer Funeral Homes, P.A. of Frederick and Stauffer Crematory, Inc
