Mr. James "Jim" H. Mackley, 81 of Thurmont, Maryland, passed away, with his family by his side, Friday, December 24, 2010 at his home. He is survived by his wife Dorothy Dibert Mackley, his wife of 56 years. They were married and lived in the same house in Thurmont their entire married life.
Born January 3, 1929 in Thurmont, Maryland, he was the son of the late Lloyd and Ruth Holdcraft Mackley.
Mr. Mackley was a lifelong, active member of Trinity United Church of Christ, where he held many leadership roles. He graduated from Thurmont High School in 1946 and then went on to serve his country in the U.S. Navy. Jim found long-term employment with Moore Business Forms where he completed a 40 year career in the bindery department.
Having joined the Guardian Hose Company as a volunteer just out of high school, Jim spent his next 62 years as an active volunteer fire fighter in the company. He served as fire chief for nine years and had the honor of being inducted into the Frederick County Fire Fighter’s Hall of Fame. Jim was also a Boy Scout leader for sixteen years. Friends will remember his devotion to family, commitment to community service, and keen sense of humor.
In addition to his wife he is survived by his children Charles M. Mackley and wife Melissa of Williamsport, Ruth Broome and husband Brian of Greensboro, N.C. and Sara "Sally" Tokar and husband Andy of Thurmont, grandchildren Elizabeth and Christopher Mackley, Emily and Matthew Broome, Ryan Tokar and wife Lindsay and Sarah and Meghan Tokar, his sisters Helen and Martha Mackley and brother James "Buzz" Mackley and wife Julie all of Thurmont. Many nieces and nephews also survive.
He was preceded in death by a sister Naomi Green.
A Memorial service will be held Friday, December 31, at 11:00 a.m. from the Trinity United Church of Christ, 101 E. Main Street, Thurmont, with Rev. Les Sims officiating. Friends may visit with the family from 10:00 a.m. until service time.
Interment will be private.
