A loving husband, father, grandfather and brother, James William “Bill” Cullop (86) of Mount Airy, MD was called to eternal life on August 4, 2024. Bill was the loving husband of Dottie M. Cullop for 50 years. He was born in Chatham Hill, VA to the late Raymond Edgar Cullop and Mary Ruth Cullop (nee Atwell). He was a deacon at Locust Grove Church of the Brethren for over 40 years and loved being a part of the praise music group.
Along with his loving wife, Dottie, he leaves behind 5 children: Jay Cullop, Jeanie Cullop-Watkins (Tom), Kimmie Sue Cullop, Scott Benford (Della), and Bernice Marion (Dave). He joined 2 of his children in Heaven: Jerry Cullop and Joanna Cullop-Moore. He is survived by 14 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his siblings: Gene Cullop (Juanita), Dottie Meadows (Harold), JoLacy Roebuck, Roscoe Cullop (Glenda), as well as a host of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by sisters Charlotte Henninger, Sarah “Penny” Colson (Jerry), and Pat Langley (Jessie).
Bill was the owner of J.W. Cullop, Inc, a commercial HVAC company, for 56 years and a 1966 graduate of Columbia Technical School in VA. He would often say his work was his life’s calling. He was a HVAC program designer, master electrician, and teacher, just to name a few of his many talents. Bill managed his company up until his final days. Before starting his business, he served in the Air Force from 1956 to 1960.
Bill’s greatest passion in life was music. He played several instruments, the guitar, mandolin, saxophone, and harmonica. He was also an avid writer of beautiful poems and songs that told the story of his incredible life, unique sense of humor, and his friendship with the Lord.
Family will receive visitors on Wednesday, August 7, 2024, from 2:00-4:00PM and 7:00-9:00PM at Stauffer Funeral Home in Mount Airy. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, August 8, 2024, at 11:00 AM at Locust Grove Church of the Brethren, 13356 Glissans Mill Rd., Mount Airy, MD 21771. A reception will follow the service. Donations can be sent to Locust Grove Church of the Brethren in Bill’s memory.
