James Boston

December 21, 1934 — October 18, 2016

James Russell Boston, 81, loving father and husband and Professor Emeritus of Hood College of Frederick, Maryland, passed away the morning of October 18, 2016 after several illnesses. Memorial services will be held at Coffman Chapel, Hood College, Frederick, MD, on November 1, 2016, at 4 p.m.  Dr. Boston, the only child of Harry Willis Boston and Mae Ann Short, was raised in San Diego, CA. He received a B.A. at Stanford University as well as an M.Div. and Ph.D. at Union Theological Seminary/Columbia in New York City. He was an ordained minister in the United Church of Christ and Pastor of Plainville Christian Church in Plainville, NY before accepting a faculty position at Hood College in 1965. He would remain in Hood’s Religion and Philosophy Dept. for 34 years, teaching Asian and Biblical studies, before his retirement in 1999. An enthusiast of history and genealogy, he spent many hours volunteering at the Historical Society of Frederick County, eventually transcribing and editing the book “So We Move Along…” from the 19th century diaries of Frederick residents Lewis and Jacob Engelbrecht. However, his greatest passion in life was his endless affection for family and friends. He is survived by his wife Jennifer of Frederick, daughter Catherine  of Charlottesville, VA, son John  of Columbia, MD, and first wife, Jean of Charlottesville, VA. He is predeceased by his daughter Jacqueline Ann.  Donations in his memory can be made to Kline Hospice House of Mt. Airy, where he so lovingly volunteered to help those in need, and where he himself spent his final days. (Kline Hospice House Fund, Hospice of Frederick County, 516 Trail Avenue, PO Box 1799, Frederick MD 21702; www.hospiceoffrederick.org/services/kline-house). Arrangements with Stauffer Funeral Home, Frederick. Expressions of sympathy may be shared with the family at www.staufferfuneralhome.com.
