James F. Alexander, 88 of Walkersville, passed away peacefully after a stroke and a long battle with Alzheimer's on Saturday, January 6, 2018 at Genesis/Glade Valley Nursing & Rehab Center. He was the husband of Doris O. (Whitmore) Alexander for 62 years. Fred was born on October 7, 1929 in Middletown, the son of Guy F. Alexander, Sr. and Orpha M. (Shoemaker) Alexander.
He formerly worked for C.F. Main and Sons Ice Cream, Chestnut Farms Dairy, Ebert’s Ice Cream Company, and B & C Utility Supply, Inc., from which he retired in 1994. Mr. Alexander proudly served in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict, having been awarded a Purple Heart. Fred was an active member of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Walkersville, where he served as church treasurer for many years. He also belonged to the Senior Citizens of Walkersville. Mr. Alexander enjoyed volunteering in the community, and especially enjoyed gardening. Fred was an active life member of the Walkersville Volunteer Fire Company and Walkersville Volunteer Rescue Company.
Surviving, in addition to his wife, are: 3 children: Peggy Ann Beasley and husband Scott of Kuna, ID, Ronald L. Alexander and wife Susan of Harpers Ferry, WV and Dennis T. Alexander and wife Sharon of Gaithersburg, MD; 2 grandchildren: Amy Miller and R. Lee Alexander, II; 2 great-grandchildren: Honore Banes and Cyrus Alexander; a step-granddaughter: Holly Cook Delauter and a step great-grandson: Kaleb Welch. He is also survived by a brother: Guy F. (Skeets) Alexander, Jr. and wife Peggy, and brother-in-law Charles Palmer, all of Middletown; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a granddaughter: Angela B. Alexander; sisters: Geneva Palmer, Kathryn Leese, Winifred Summers and Margaret Snoots; and brothers-in-law Dick Leese, John D. Summers, and Millard Snoots.
Much gratitude is extended to the nurses and aides of Genesis Glade Valley Center for the loving care given to Reds over nine-plus years.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 8:00 pm on Wednesday, January 10, 2018 at Stauffer Funeral Home, 40 Fulton Avenue, Walkersville. A celebration of Reds’ life journey will take place at 11:00 am on Thursday, January 11, 2018, at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 19 W. Pennsylvania Avenue, Walkersville. Interment will be at Resthaven Memorial Gardens, Frederick.
