Mr. Jack Whitfield Murphy, Jr., 64, of Orwigsburg, PA, formerly of Frederick, MD and Bethesda, MD, died suddenly while on a sailing vacation with friends on the Chesapeake Bay on Tuesday, May 15, 2012.
Born September 19, 1947 he was the son of the late Jack Whitfield Murphy, Sr., and late Mary C. Murphy.
He was a graduate of Walter Johnson High School, the University of Southern California, and the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg.
He served in the US Marines from 1965-1968 during Vietnam. He also served on missions with President Johnson at Camp David and as an elite US Marine body bearer at Arlington National Cemetery.
Jack’s career included the Federal Trade Commission; landscape management; a family jewelry business in Bethesda, MD; and the ordained ministry. Most recently, he served as a dedicated Hospice volunteer and state park chaplain.
Jack loved living life to the fullest, spending time with friends and family, being on the Chesapeake Bay, traveling, and most recently, spending time with his grandchildren and his lab, Mia.
He was a lifelong sailor and outdoorsman.
He is survived by his five sons, Scott Murphy and wife Carey; Christopher Murphy and wife Karen; Kevin Murphy and wife Shannon; Michael Murphy; and Brian Murphy; five grandchildren, Elle Murphy, Dillon Murphy, Chase Murphy, Mackenzie Murphy and Cole Murphy. He will also be remembered by his beloved partner, Ann Miller and her son Brad Miller.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother Robert S. Murphy; former wife, Dianne C. Murphy; and the late Austin Miller.

A Memorial service celebrating Jack’s life will be held on Sunday, May 20, at 3:30 pm at the amphitheater at Locust Lake State Park (10 min walk from visitor parking), 220 Locust Lake Road, Barnesville, PA 18214. A reception with family and friends will follow the ceremony in Orwigsburg, PA.
For friends outside of the PA region, a reception will be scheduled Father’s Day Weekend 2012 in Maryland on the shores of the Chesapeake Bay. Details to follow.
