Ivan Nazelrod

Mr. Ivan Nazelrod, 81, of Brunswick, Maryland, went to be with The Lord and his beloved wife Ruby, his wife of 56 years, on Thursday evening May 31, 2007.

He was being cared for by the devoted staff of Citizens Care and Rehabilitation Center, Frederick Md.

Born May 21, 1926 in Landis, WV., to Frank William Nazelrod and Ada Cora Ketterman Nazelrod, he was one of seven children. Ivan grew up working on the family farms, first on Middle Mountain near Petersburg, WV., and then at Three Churches, WV.

In 1944 he was drafted into active duty in WWII, serving as a member of the 27th Infantry, 25th Division, known as the Wolfhounds. During his tour of duty in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater, Ivan served in the Philippines, Guam and Japan.

On November 17, 1946 he received an Honorable Discharge and returned to Three Churches, WV., where he met Ruby Lewis. They were married in 1949. Ivan
enlisted in the regular army that same year and was sent to Korea as a member of the 3rd Combat Engineers, 24th Division, known as the Eager Beavers. After 3 years in Korea, Ivan returned to Fort Lee, VA, serving as the 701 st Quarter Master CO, until receiving an Honorable Discharge in June of 1954.

That year he began work for Capital Transit in DC, operating a street car along the 14th Street routes, until moving to Brunswick MD, in 1955 and starting his Railroading career with the B&O. For the next 33 years, Ivan worked as a Carman in the Brunswick Yards, then as a Brakeman, Freight Conductor and Passenger Conductor on the Baltimore Division, before retiring in 1988. During times of furlough, Ivan worked numerous multiple jobs such as delivery man for J.P. Karns Lumber, Sonny Cannon Sound Systems, tending bar at the local Moose Club, welding at Todd Steel and North American Housing in Point of Rocks, MD.

Mr. Nazelrod was a loving provider for his family. When not working he Coached minor league baseball, and Scout Master for Troupe 277 in Brunswick. As a member of the First Baptist Church, he assisted with the RA's. He was a Volunteer Firemen with the Brunswick Fire Department in the late 1950's and early 1960's. After retiring, Ivan was a member ofVFW Post 10421, and along with his wife supported theatre in Frederick County Public Schools through many hours of volunteer work.

He is survived by his sons, Michael J. Nazelrod of Brunswick, Joseph I. Nazelrod of St. Marys, WV., daughter Peggy A. Nazelrod of Frederick, a granddaughter, Jennifer L. Nazelrod of Frederick, a grandson, Joseph I. Nazelrod II of Brunswick and a great grandson, Mark A. Washington of Frederick, a sister Nina Hershey of Strasburg, VA., numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and special friends.

In addition to his parents, Ivan is preceded in death by two sisters, Violet Whetzel, Elizabeth Hare, and three brothers, Esten Nazelrod, Jesse Nazelrod, and Elvin Nazelrod.

Visitation: The family will receive friends at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 1100 North Maple Ave., Brunswick, on Monday, June 4, 2007, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9pm.

Services: Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday, June 5, 2007, at ll am. with Pastor Alan Smith, officiating. Interment will be in the Brownsville Church of the Brethren Cemetery.
