Isabel Melton

Isabel Scott Melton, 89, of Mount Airy, MD passed from this life on Friday, February 3, 2017. She reunited with her beloved husband, Lewis Earl Melton who passed on January 6, 2017

Born on October 5, 1927, in Paguate, NM, she was the daughter of Frank Scott and Daisy Seonia Scott, both from the Pueblo of Laguna, NM.

She graduated 1946 from Albuquerque Indian School in NM and shortly after jointed the U. S. Women’s Army Corps receiving Nurse’s training.

After dedicating her early life to raising her two sons, she was a Nurse working at Montgomery General Hospital in Olney, MD. She returned to school and training and obtained federal employment with the Indian Health Service (IHS) Headquarters in Rockville MD. She received several IHS Recognition Awards before retiring from the Service in 1992.

She was a member of Millian Memorial United Methodist Church, Rockville, MD, and was a member of the Church’s Couples Club.

She is survived by her sons, David Scott Melton and Glenn Thomas Melton, daughters-In-Law, Ada Pecos Melton and Deborah Marie Jeanotte Melton; six grandchildren, Dana Giles married to Jason Giles, Rita Martinez married to Ruben Martinez, David John Melton married to Beth Melton, Kristin Melton, Michael Melton and Madison Melton; great-grandchildren, Maria Lopez, Matthew Lopez, Matthew Martinez, Aaron Giles, Anthony Martinez, Marcus Martinez and Alex Giles. She is survived by her sisters, Ethel Scott, Jean Young, and Roselyn Albert and brother, Merle Scott, sister in law, Mae Ann Scott, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Isabel was an enrolled Pueblo of Laguna member and grew up in Paguate, NM and Winslow, AZ where her father worked on the Santa Fe Railway. She enlisted in the Women’s Army Corps. While serving she met the love of her life, Lew,during his first stint in  the Army, First Air Cavalry Division, where they were both stationed in Fort Jackson, SC in 1951. They were married on May 10, 1952 in Washington, DC. Upon their Discharge from the Army, they moved and lived in the Washington, DC metro area their whole married life including DC, Arlington, VA, Rockville, Olney, and Mount Airy, MD. She was a die-hard Washington Redskin fan and was a season ticket holder from 1958 to present, following them from Griffiths Stadium, RFK Stadium to Fedex Field never missing any home games until later in life. She was a long-term member of the North American Indian Women’s Association and the DC area American Indian Society and was a donor to several Indian Missions to support Indian children’s education. She was an avid Duck-pin bowler and was on mixed leagues with her husband. Together with her husband and sons they made many cross-country trips in the family car to visit her relatives on the Laguna Reservation. She moved with her husband to their peaceful country home in Mt. Airy, MD, where they enjoyed the fruits of their labor and the love of their, now large family.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Tuesday, February 14, 2017 at Millian United Methodist Church, 13016 Parkland Drive in Rockville, MD.

A celebration of Isabel's life journey will take place at 2 p.m. Tuesday, February 14, 2017 at the Millian United Methodist Church in Rockville. Rev. Dr. Miguel A. Balderas will officiate. Interment will be at Parklawn Memorial Park in Rockville.
