Iris Young

Iris June Young, 79, of Frederick, MD, passed away peacefully at Sunrise Senior Living of Frederick on Thursday, December 27, 2018.  She was born May 31, 1939, in Roanoke, Virginia.  She was predeceased by her father, Mark Blair Young, her mother, Alma Lee Coleman Young, and a brother, David Blair Young.

Iris received her Bachelor's Degree from Marshall University in Huntington, WV and a  Master's in Music and Elementary Education from the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music.  She taught voice and piano at Marshall University and , after moving to Maryland, taught at the elementary level at Urbana, Lucy Barnsley, and Strathmore in Montgomery County.  She received her PhD from the University of Maryland at College Park.  She was a leader in teaching other schools across the country to use non-graded team teaching.

She sang at a local television station in Huntington, WV when she was still in high school and with Fred Waring and the Pennsylvanians after she graduated.  She enjoyed using her talents in various churches and has sung at the White House and for the U.S. Senate on several occasions.  The past two years she has spent much time playing the piano and singing for the residents on the third floor at Sunrise Senior Living where she was a resident.

She touched many lives and will be greatly missed.  Special thanks go to the staff of Sunrise and to Carroll County Hospice for their loving care.

The viewing will be from 11:00 am to 12:00 noon on Wednesday, January 2, 2019 at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike Frederick, MD 21702. A celebration of her life will begin at 12:00 noon with a reception immediately following.  Interment will follow at Mount Olivet Cemetery.
