Ira Archie Caldwell, Jr., age 95, of Frederick, MD died unexpectedly Saturday, March 19, 2018 at his home in Frederick.
Born September 24, 1922 in Detour, MD, he was the son of the late Ira Archie and Anna Elizabeth Caldwell. He was the husband of the late Anna Virginia Caldwell, whom he married on June 12, 1941.
Mr. Caldwell attended Walkersville High School, Class of 1935.
He joined the US Army in December 1942, and was twice wounded in combat in Europe in WW II. He was assigned to Company E, 9th Infantry Regiment 2nd Division. After the war ended, Mr. Caldwell was employed as a civilian in the contracting office at Fort Detrick, MD. During his thirty-one year civilian career, he rose through the ranks to become the Chief of the Contracting Office.Mr. Caldwell retired from the United States Government in August 1976, and after four years of retirement was employed by the Frederick Cancer Research Center until 1986.
He was a past president of the Woodsboro Lions Club, and a member for 37 years. He was also a lifelong member of the Woodsboro Evangelical Lutheran Church. He particularly enjoyed golfing with a group of post retirement friends.
He is survived by two sons, Richard A. Caldwell of Woodland Hills, CA. and Donald W. Caldwell and wife, Jill, of Frederick, MD.
He was predeceased by one sister, Evelyn Mae Caldwell.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, March 26, 2018 at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick. Rev. Dahl Drenning will officiate. Interment will be in the Mount Hope Cemetery, Woodsboro.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, March 25th at the Stauffer Funeral Home in Frederick.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association.
