Iona O. "Jackie" (Zittle) Poffenberger, 96, formerly of Young Avenue in Boonsboro, passed from this life on Tuesday, August 13, 2013 at Fahrney-Keedy Home & Village in Boonsboro.
Born on December 6, 1916, in Zittlestown, Maryland, she was the daughter of the late Alvey Conroy and Orpha Estelle (Kline) Zittle. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wilbur A. Poffenberger in 1990, and her two sons, Dennis Lee Poffenberger in 1951, and Ronald E. Poffenberger in 2003.
Jackie and her husband were the owners of the Boonsboro Hardware Store until their retirement in 1975.
She was a member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Boonsboro where she had also been a member of the Trinity Lutheran Sisters.
She is survived by her daughter, Donna J. Dempsey and husband Ray of Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania; and two sons, Arthur W. "Skip" Poffenberger and wife Audrey of Zittlestown, Maryland, and W. Rennis and wife Sara of Marco Island, Florida and England. She is also survived by seven grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Poffenberger was a loving wife, mother and grandmother who will be fondly remembered for her every Sunday family dinners at her home. She loved to cook and bake, and also enjoyed playing dominoes, cards and bingo. She will also be remembered for her love of trips to Las Vegas and Atlantic City.
In addition to her parents, her husband, and her two sons, she was preceded in death by two brothers, George W. and Alvey H. Zittle; and four sisters, Naomia C. Gigeous, Hermia McKnight, Hattie V. Poffenberger and Alice M. Parsons.
A funeral ceremony will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, August 18, 2013 at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, 64 South Main Street in Boonsboro. Rev. Joseph I. Donovan, III will officiate. Final resting place ceremonies will follow in the Boonsboro Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, August 17, 2013 at the Bast-Stauffer Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike in Boonsboro, as well as one hour prior to the service at the church.
