Howard (Bub) Stup, Jr.

Howard Joseph Stup, Jr. (Bub), age 83, passed away due to complications from lung cancer on June 28, 2018 at Frederick Memorial Hospital.  He was born December 22, 1934 on the family farm near Adamstown, MD to Howard J. Stup, Sr. and Lucille Margaret Virts Stup. He was very proud to say that he had lived along Howard Stup Road for his entire life.

In his youth, “Bub” enjoyed spending time outdoors with his sisters, cousins, and the many friends who lived in the Adamstown community.  He rode horses, helped with the family butcherings, and worked alongside his father milking cows and raising crops.  Going to movies on Saturday night with his family to see Johnny Mack Brown and Buck Jones, inspired a lifelong love of westerns. As a teenager, he took great pride in rearing prize winning hogs for the County and State Fair.   One of his greatest accomplishments as a young man was being a starting offensive/defensive tackle on the undefeated FHS State Football Champions of 1952. He received a scholarship to Georgia Tech to play football, but turned it down because he said he would rather farm.  He was also a charter member of Carroll Manor Fire Company and acted as a line officer, driving both the ambulance and firetruck.

Being active in his community was important for Howard. He participated in several agriculture organizations that included: member of the Capital Milk Producers Association, Board member of Southern States Cooperative of Frederick, and member of the the Frederick County Farm Bureau for over fifty years.  During this time, he also served as deacon and elder at his family church, Adamstown Community Church (formerly Trinity, E&R).

As a lifelong farmer, he raised both beef and dairy cows during his career.  In his later years, he focused on crop farming.  His strong interest in the pork business, led to many profitable butcherings throughout the years.  Howard was tenacious when it came to preparing for this event and had an equal interest in making sure his pudding, scrapple, and sausage were seasoned perfectly.  His reputation as a butcher led to his high demand by many organizations, especially CMFC. As a hobby, he owned and raced horses at the Charlestown Race Track in West Virginia for many years.

Howard is remembered lovingly by his wife of 60 years, Texanna Wood Stup and their four children:  Bill Stup and wife, Lori, of Frederick, MD; Steve Stup and wife, Mary, of Great Falls, VA; Kim Imboden and husband, Mike, of Frederick, MD; Greg Stup and wife, Denise, of Frederick, MD.  He also leaves behind eleven grandchildren who made him very proud; Billy, Bobby, Brady, and Brennan Stup;  Trevor, Morgan, and Cole Stup; David and James Imboden; Owen and Delaney Stup. Also surviving are three of his dear sisters:  Anna Belle Easton, Helen Powell (twin), Phyllis Martin, and her husband, Kenny. He will be remembered by his many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.  He was predeceased by his son, Douglas Howard, and his sisters, Frances Walter and Lorraine Biser.

The family will receive friends Monday, July 2, from 6-8 pm at Stauffer Funeral Home, Frederick, MD.  A funeral service will be held at 10 am on Tuesday, July 3, at Stauffer’s, immediately followed by a graveside service at Manor Cemetery on Ballenger Creek Pike. Pastor Timothy Seek of Adamstown Community Church will be officiating and Pastor Jeff Summers, Howard’s nephew, will provide the Eulogy.
