Howard Marcellus (Mark) Swain, 95 years old, most recently lived at the Homewood Retirement Community, Williamsport, Md. with Fancy, his Siamese cat.
He was born on the family farm on Mondell Road in Sharpsburg, Md. on Oct. 14, 1921. Mark was the son of the late Howard Milton and Inez Myrtle (Smith) Swain. He was married to the late Eula Huffer of Boonsboro, Md. who died in 2014.
Mark grew up in Sharpsburg and graduated from Boonsboro High in 1940. He graduated from Hagerstown Business College in 1943 with a Bachelor's Degree in Commercial Business. He was a self-employed public accountant for 35 years. In 1984, he merged his practice with W. F. Park & Co., CPAs, which later merged with Bachtell & Co. where he worked as a Tax Consultant until his retirement in 1997.
He worked for the Maryland Racing Commission in the 1960s, and held official positions at various race tracks in Maryland, West Virginia, and Kentucky.
He served as a member and Chairman of the Washington County Republican Central Committee. In 1968, he was a delegate to the Republican National Convention in Miami. He was a co-founder of the South Mountain Republican Club in Boonsboro in the 1950s, and the Elephant Club of Washington County in the 1960s.
Mark was a member of the Elks Club, National Society of Accountants, Hagerstown Community College Scholarship Foundation, Antique Auto Club AACA, Mason-Dixon Antique Auto Club, Chrysler Air-Flow Auto Club, and was president of the Mountain View Cemetery Board of Trustees.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Minerva Swain Snyder.
He is survived by his daughter, Marcia Swain; grandchildren, Nicholas Swain (Cherie) Moser of Fairplay, Md. and Julie Moser (David) Hebig of Allentown, Pa.; and four great-grandchildren, Colson and Connor Hebig, and Hanna and Emily Moser. Mark is also survived by brother-in-law, Alfred C. Huffer, Jr. of Delmar, Md.; and nephew, Andreas Huffer; and niece, Lisa Huffer Harbaugh.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 27, 2017 at Bast-Stauffer Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike, Boonsboro with Reverend Delancy L. Catlett officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to services Tuesday at the funeral home.
Interment will follow in the Mt. View Cemetery, Sharpsburg, Md.
