Howard Jerome "Jerry" Smith of Mount Airy, MD passed away peacefully on July 19,2010 at the age of
83 .

Jerry was born July 6 , 1927 in Washington , D.C. , the soo of the late Isabel and John Connick and his father
John Smith
.

He married Carmen Adolfina Henriquez on August 25,1948, who preceded him in death on August I ,
2002.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Carmencita Smith.

He is survived by one son , Hollis "Tony" Smith, and wife Roxane Smith of Mount Airy ; grandson , Jedediah
Smith of Caldwell, NJ and granddaughter
, Chelsea Smith of Woodbine , MD.

Jerry served in the Marine Corps , }st Division, as a Radio Operator , during World War II in Okinawa .
Returning from the war, he soon married Carmen and they moved to her native home of Santo Domingo
,
Dominican Republic .
There he worked as a freelance artist for several years before settling back in
Washington, D
.
C. after the birth of their daughter. Jerry worked at the Washington Post as an illustrator for
the advertisement department
.
He then worked in the presentations department as an illustrator and designer
for government contracts for John Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory. He did multiple renderings of the
new design Tomahawk Missile, also doing freelance work where he illustrated the book
Wild Animals of
North America
. He worked for John Hopkins until eventually retiring and was able to work
00 his true
passion of wood carvings and oatural history art.

He had a great love for history and was self taught in the Lakota (Sioux) Language. He made continuous
contributions to the Saint Joseph
' s Indian School . They prov i
de care and education to Lakota children and
their families
. He was an avid outdoorsman with a passion for hunting and fishing .

Jerry was a devout Catholic and a member of Saint Michael's Parish . He was a loving and devoted father
and grandfather. He will be greatly missed by the many people who have been touched by his love and
generosity.

Friends will be received at Stauffer Funeral Home in Mount Airy on Friday, July 23,2010 from 7-9 p.m.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a
. m . on Saturday at Saint Michael's Chapel in Poplar Springs , with Rev
.
Michael Ruane officiating .

Interment will be beside his wife and daughter in Saint Michael's Cemetery.
