Hilda L. Ausherman, 97, of Adamstown, Maryland, passed peacefully from this life surrounded by her family on Tuesday, October 17 at Buckingham’s Choice assisted living.
The daughter of the late John E. and Mary Maude Delauter Mercer, Hilda was born on September 25, 1920 and was a life-long resident of Frederick County. She was married for 61 years to the late Ernest W. Ausherman, the founder of Ausherman Construction Co. and several other construction and real estate companies in the Frederick area, and in the early years of those businesses she assisted her husband in the administrative sides of the businesses, while also raising a family and running the household. Hilda was the loving Mother of four children, Curtis, Janice, Marvin and Dale; and Grandmother to 11 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
Hilda graduated from Frederick High school and married Ernie in 1939, and, like so many other young wives, held down the home front while her husband went into military service during World War II. A lifetime member and supporter of the Frederick Church of the Brethren, her passions were gardening, family and home, but she also managed to fit in some world-travel to Europe, Africa and Asia. Hilda and Ernie were well-known for their philanthropic generosity, and supported many different causes in Frederick County and elsewhere. Frederick Church of the Brethren, Bridgewater College, and Bethany Theological Seminary, were all special interests, along with many other programs in Frederick County.
Hilda will be remembered as a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, grand-mother and great grand-mother, for her loyal values and generous nature, and for her love of home, family, church and Frederick County. She was the matriarch of the extended Ausherman family, and as she now makes this final journey, she will be dearly missed, but never forgotten.
She is survived by one daughter, Janice A. Walsh and husband, James H., of Richmond, VA; two sons, Curtis W. Ausherman and wife, Frances I., of Williamsport, MD, and Marvin E. Ausherman of Frederick; daughter-in-law, Candace J. Ausherman, wife of the late Dale E. Ausherman, of Myrtle Beach, SC; two sisters, Anna M. Jackson and Mildred E. Harrington; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Hilda was preceded in death by her husband Ernest W. Ausherman; her youngest son, Dale E. Ausherman; her brother, Grayson H. Mercer; two sisters, Mary A. Biser and Leida I. Garst; and a grandson, Christopher W. Ausherman.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, October 20, 2017 at the Frederick Church of the Brethren, 201 Fairview Avenue, Frederick, Maryland. The family will receive friends immediately following the services at a luncheon in the fellowship hall of the Frederick Church of the Brethren.
A private family burial will be held at the Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
The family wishes to extend their deepest gratitude to the staff at Buckingham's Choice assisted living facility for the loving care of their mother and grandmother during her lengthy residency.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Deacon's Fund at the Frederick Church of the Brethren or to the Ernest and Hilda Ausherman Scholarship Fund at Bridgewater College.
