Hilary Cate Odom, 71, of Jefferson, Maryland, passed away suddenly and peacefully on January 24, 2023. Hilary was surrounded by loved ones that held her until she was ready to let go. She left this world knowing how much she was loved, how much her love was felt by all, and that it was time for her to rest.
Hilary, born on March 19, 1951, to Gordon and Lorraine Cate, in Prince George’s County, Maryland, immediately brought joy and laughter into this world. She was a member of Job’s Daughters during her youth, where she met many life-long friends. She was proud to carry on her Father’s traditions.
After graduation, Hilary worked for the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) her entire 40-year career. She began Federal service in 1970 working for Veterinary Services. In 1979, Hilary transferred to the Professional Development Center, Plant Protection and Quarantine, APHIS, USDA, in Frederick, Maryland. There, she proudly held a variety of positions, including Training Technician, Senior Editor, and Administrator of Testing and Evaluation. Her USDA family provided her with more life-long friends, and countless joy, for, decades.
In 1978, she married Henry (Jay) Odom, the absolute love of her life. The two were inseparable from the moment they met. They went on to have one child, Emily Lorraine Woodruff, in 1980.
She loved gardening, wildlife, and found extreme enjoyment in creating spaces in her yard for both. Hilary found immense peace, joy, and pride in maintaining her gorgeous yard and property. She passed that passion onto her daughter, Emily Woodruff, who continues to honor that passion.
Hilary was a fiercely dedicated mom to all of her children, including Rebecca Cox and Jennifer Davis; her “adopted” daughters. Family, be it blood or chosen, came first and was above all else to Hilary, a value she instilled in all those around her. Growing up, Hilary was always there for us, whether we needed help with our homework or just a shoulder to cry on. She was a true role model who we will always look up to. The hole left by her absence is impossible to fill.
Hilary was predeceased by her parents, and her sister, Elizabeth Mericanti. She is survived by her husband, her daughter, and her granddaughter, Alice Woodruff.
Hilary requested to be cremated, and her ashes spread. A memorial service will be held Saturday, February 18, 2023, 3:00pm, at Stauffer Funeral Home in Frederick, MD. We encourage all to come celebrate her life with us.
