Herman “Paul” Bowens was born on April 9, 1945, to Jane L. Bowens Dorsey and Herman Dotson in Frederick, Maryland. He was affectionately known by many as “Paul” or “Joe Nasty.” On April 3, 2025, Paul peacefully entered eternal rest, just days before his 80th birthday.
Paul received his education at both Lincoln and Frederick High School. After graduating from high school, he proudly served his country in the United States Army. Following his military service, Paul built a successful career in restaurant and retail management, working with establishments such as Red Hot & Blue in Frederick, the Moose Restaurant in College Park, and the Hecht’s company, where he served in leadership roles before eventually retiring. Paul was a loving, gentle, compassionate, and intelligent man who left a lasting impact on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. A devoted fan of the Washington Redskins-now the Commanders-Paul rarely missed a game and shared his love of sports with enthusiasm. He also enjoyed basketball, volleyball, tennis, and hockey.
Beyond sports, Paul had many passions. He loved to cook gourmet meals, especially seafood, and took pride in baking-his chocolate chip cookies and cakes were legendary among family and friends. He was a lover of fine dining and great music, with tastes that ranged from gospel and jazz to blues and R&B. One of his all-time favorite songs was California Love by Tupac Shakur. Paul also had a thoughtful and curious mind; he enjoyed discussing politics and sharing his honest, considered views. In the neighborhood, he was lovingly known as “Poppy,” a nickname given to him by children and neighbors who admired his kindness and playful spirit.
Paul leaves behind his loving and devoted wife, Charlene Bowens; his son, Darvia Williams (Erica); and three cherished grandchildren. He also leaves behind a beloved young woman, Anita Michels Gordon, whom he helped raise and who lovingly knew him as “Dad.” He is survived by his two brothers, Melvin and John Boyce; four sisters-in-law; and three brothers-in-law; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends who will miss him dearly. He was preceded in death by his sister, Helen Bowens.
Paul’s life was a beautiful blend of service, love, laughter, and strength. His legacy lives on in the lives he touched and the hearts he filled.
