Herbert D. Main
1933-2016
Mr. Herbert Donald "Herb" Main, 82, of Frederick, passed away on Tuesday, August 2, 2016, at his residence surrounded by his family. He was the husband of the late Shirley Winona Crawford Main, who died in 2008. Born in Frederick, MD on December 9, 1933, he was a son of the late William H. Main, Sr. and Flora Carpenter Main and grew up on West Fifth Street with ten siblings.
Herb started working at age eleven delivering newspaper for the Frederick News Post. In 1947 until 1950 he worked for the Arcade bowling alley setting up duck pins. From there he worked at several local gas stations. After graduating from Frederick High School in 1952 he went to work for Callan and Cramer Automotive where he was employed for thirty-eight and a half years. In 1990 he went to work for Automotive Industrial retiring from there in 2001 but continued working part-time until 2004 ending his career as an auto parts salesman after 52 years.
Herb loved working on cars, lawn mowers and was often referred to as the neighborhood "handy man" for his ability to fix just about anything. He had an amazing ability to recall dates, facts and events whenever questioned about them. Herb loved Barbershop style singing and was a member of the local Catoctones Barbershop Chorus for several years. He joined the Independent Hose Company No. 1 in 2010 as an Associate member helping with fund raising events such as banquets and making wreaths to sell at the Christmas Tree Lot. He also enjoyed volunteering on the Company's Canteen Unit.
Surviving is one daughter, Teresa "Terry" Ann Foreman and husband C. Dewey Foreman, Jr. of Frederick; one step-granddaughter Melissa D. Schroder and husband Jim of Ankeny, Iowa and two very special step great-grandchildren Morgan Hansen and Olivia Schroder of Iowa. One godson Michael A. Main; two brothers, Millard "Bud" Main and Robert "Bob" Main and his wife Barbara all of Frederick; one sister, Ruth Shafer and one sister-in-law, Millie Grove Main also from Frederick; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by four brothers, William H. Main, Jr., Paul Main, James Main, Edgar Main and by three sisters, Eleanor Magaha, Edna Younkins and Anna Schwartz Valentine.
The family will receive relatives and friends at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick, MD on Sunday, from 2-4 and 6-8 pm and where funeral service will be held on Monday, August 8, 2016 at 11 am with Rev. Tim May officiating. Interment Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be James Schroder, Michael Main, M. Dennis Shafer, Robert Parrish, Steve Shook and Martin Fuller. Honorary pallbearers will be Walter Clem, Gary Boyer, Leo Shank, Edward Anderson, Chuck Harp, Charles Handley, Larry Wenschhof and Wayne Younkins.
His family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Hospice of Frederick for their services and to all of his doctors.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Independent Hose Company ay No. 1, 310 Baughman's Lane, Frederick, MD 21702.
