Mr. Henry E. Ponton, Jr., 91, of Frederick, MD passed away Monday, June 16, 2014 at the Edenton Nursing Home.  He was the beloved husband of the late Mida Ponton.

Born on June 26, 1922 in Frederick, MD he was the son of the late Henry E. Sr., and Luma Frye Ponton.

Mr. Ponton proudly served his country during WWII in the US Army.  He went overseas with Co A, 115th infantry, 29th Division of the Maryland National Guard and landed on Omaha Beach on D-Day, June 6, 1944.  He was awarded the Bronze Star for his service in France.  Mr. Ponton continued his military service after the war with the MD National Guard and the U.S. Army Reserve, retiring in 1962 with 20 years of service.  Also Mr. Ponton was recently awarded the French Legion Medal of Honor for his WWII service in France.  Henry retired as a Federal Protection Officer for Atomic Energy.  He was a life member of the Frederick VFW, Woodsboro American Legion, the Middletown AMVETS, the Jr. Fire Co.,  29th Division Association Cresap Rifles Post 78,  Frederick Moose Lodge, and the Hagerstown Elks Club.  Upon Henry's retirement he enjoyed going to auctions  and taking part in the 29th Division Association Cresap Rifles activities.

He is survived by his children Henry "Pete" Ponton and wife Dorothy of PA, granddaughter Jaime Sloan and husband Drew and their children Lauren A., and Lindsey K.;  daughter-in-law Chanson Ponton of Kankakee, IL and her children James R., Corey D. and Taylor J. and a granddaughter Sarah Pionke and husband Wayne and their children Trevor M., Preston T. and Austin J. and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his son Michael E. Ponton,  brother Grover R. Ponton and sisters Emily M. Miller and Mary E. Sheetenelm.

The family will receive friends at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick on Friday, June 20, 2014 from 3-5PM and 7-9PM where a funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 21 at 11AM.  Rev. John Schildt will officiate.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to either the Wounded Warrior Project,www.woundedwarriorproject.org or the National D-Day Memorial,www.dday.org.

Interment will follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
