Mr. Henry Eaton, 85, of Lewistown, entered eternal life with his wife, Ethelene, on Saturday, June 4, at their home.
Born in Mountaindale on September 12, 1925, he was the youngest and last survivor of eight children of the late Grace Rice and Samuel Colman Eaton.
Henry worked with his father in operating several local gold fish hatcheries.
Before entering service in the U.S. Navy he also worked at the Ox Fiber Brush Company in Frederick.
After his Naval discharge he trained as a carpenter with Ira D. Johnson and Norman Fry and assisted with the construction of several homes in Montgomery County.
During his Naval service from November 1943 to April 1946 he served aboard one of the seven infantry landing craft during the Normandy invasion, June 6, 1944.
The flotilla landed nearly 70,000 men without loss of a single soldier during landing on Omaha Beach, the flotilla’s D-Day objective.
He was a member of the Lewistown Methodist Church and enjoyed participation in the activities of the Cold Deer Hunting and Fishing Club, Mountaindale.
He is survived by two sons, Dr. James Coleman Eaton, PhD, and wife, Sooki, of Silver Spring, and Dennis Lee Eaton and wife Sharon, of Lewistown. A granddaughter, Sarah Michelle Kuhn, and husband Jeffrey, of Lewistown. Their two great-grandchildren also survive.
Henry was preceded in death by four sisters and three brothers and twin grandchildren, Megan Lynn and Amy Lynn Eaton.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM Tuesday, June 7, at Stauffer Funeral Home, 104 East Main Street, Thurmont. The service will be held at 2PM Wednesday, June 8 at the funeral home with Rev. Elza Hurst Officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Frederick.
A reception will follow at Lewistown Methodist Church.
