Mrs. Helen E. Tschiffely, 86, a lifelong resident of Thurmont, died peacefully at her home of 60 years on Wednesday, June 11 2008.
Born May 8, 1922, to the late James Ross Eyler, Sr. and Bertha Irene Rudy Eyler, she was the last of her immediate family having been pre-deceased by two brothers: C. Raymond Eyler and James Ross Eyler, Jr.
Helen graduated from Thurmont High School in 1939, and worked as a secretary in Frederick where she commuted daily via the Trolley. In August 1944, she married Logan O. Tschiffely of Leesburg, VA, with whom she raised four children. He died in October 1969.
She was a very dedicated mother and a conscientious homemaker who thoroughly enjoyed flower gardening and playing the piano.
For many years, Helen was a member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church where she often played the organ for church services and weddings. Later in life, she joined St. Anthony's Catholic Shrine in Emmitsburg.
She is survived by one son, Douglas A. Tschiffely and his wife JoAnn of Hyattsville; two daughters, Mary Lou La Chance of Fort Myers, FL; and Joanna Tschiffely of Fort Collins, CO; 11 grandchildren and one great grandchild.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Kitty S. Hauver, and twin grandsons, Peter and Paul Hauver.
Her children wish to publically acknowledge and thank the following individuals for competent and compassionate care of their mother during the last 20 months: Steven C. Brand, MD; Allen J. Gilson, MD; the nursing staff of Unit 4-G Frederick Memorial Hospital; the staff of Glade Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center; and the staff of Hospice of Frederick County.
Visitation: The family will received friends on Wednesday, June 18 from 3-5 & 7-9pm at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 104 East Main Street, Thurmont.
Services: A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 am on Thursday June 19, 2008 at St. Anthony's Shrine Parish, St. Anthony Road, Emmitsburg. Interment will follow in the St. Anthony Shrine Cemetery.
