Mrs. Helen “Jan” Thacher, Lewistown, MD passed away March 5, 2014. She was the loving wife of William P. Thacher for 55 years.
Born June 30, 1936, in Philadelphia, PA she was the daughter of Wilmer B. Lukens and Helen A. Lukens.
She is survived by Husband William P. Thacher, sons William C. Thacher and Jeffrey L. Thacher, sister Clare Butler and husband Jim, Brother in law Tom Thacher and wife Betty, Sister in law Pat Thacher, grandson William Z. Thacher and granddaughter Daniel McGraw, husband Brenton and Great Grandson Gavin, nephew Steven Butler and wife Liz and family, nieces Judy Kowalik and husband Rob and family, Tracy Toth and husband Larry and family, Donna Thacher, Cheryl Reid and husband Chuck, Debbie Fultz and husband Dave, Sherry Kose and husband Joe and family.
She was predeceased by parents Wilmer B. Lukens and Helen A. Lukens and brother in law Elwood J. Thacher.
She was a graduate of Penn State University and attended Moore Institute of Art in Philadelphia. She was active for many years as a Den Mother for the Cub Scouts, sharing her love of the outdoors and knowledge of Civil War History. She was active in the Rosehill Manor Carriage Society donating many hours to organizing acquisition and presentation of many historic pieces and was often seen driving the local roads in a carriage behind her favorite pony. She was avid in showmanship and breeding of working Saint Bernards, contributing much to the promotion of the breed.
She will be missed and remembered by the many family members and friends who often enjoyed her open warmth, kindness, and sharp wit, always served with a dose of hot coffee.
Family will receive friends for a memorial visit March 10, 2014 from 4:00 to 6:00 pm at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike Frederick, MD 21702.
Interment will be private.
