Helen Elizabeth Mobley Johnson, 88, passed away at Meritus Medical Center in Hagerstown on Saturday, November 18, 2017 due to complications from surgery.
Born on March 7, 1929 in Derwood, Maryland to Vernon and Carrie Ricketts Mobley, Helen was one of seven children.
She graduated from Richard Montgomery High School in 1947 and began working for the Montgomery County Health Department for 20 years, and Giant Food until retirement. Childhood sweethearts, Helen married Donald Eugene Johnson, Sr. in 1947. Over the course of their lives, Helen, who was also known as "Sissy", "Sis", or "Nanny," and Donald raised six children in Montgomery County, later relocating to Walkersville, Maryland. Helen and Donald were married 41 years before his death in 1988. Her family was always the center of her life, and Nanny’s peanut brittle, homemade cakes and hard candy will always be remembered. She enjoyed the beach, RV camping, NASCAR nation and cooking old-fashioned meals for her family. Nanny delighted in her role of grandmother to 19, great-grandmother to 39 and great-great-grandmother to 6.5. Nanny was always helping someone and her generosity to others will be fondly remembered.
Nanny is survived by her children, Sandra (William), Sharon (David), Donna (David), Diane, Donald Jr., (MaryBeth), and Sheila (Ronald); her sisters, Lucille Fitzwater of Hagerstown, Maryland and Linda Davis of Rose Hill, Virginia; and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.
Nanny was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters (Annie, Christine and Margaret), and two brothers (Vernon and James).
Helen's family would like to thank all of her friends at Francis Murphy for their kindness and friendship over the years.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, December 16, 2017 at 2:00 at the Stauffer Funeral Home chapel, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick, Maryland with a coffee hour to follow.
