Helen Horning

February 25, 1923 — December 31, 2013

Helen Lorraine (Coulter) Horning, 90, of Hagerstown, Maryland, passed from this life on Tuesday, December 31, 2013 at the Meritus Medical Center.

Born on February 25, 1923, in Yarrowsburg, Maryland, she was the daughter of the late Edward M. and Blanche M. (Kidwell) Coulter.  Her husband, Richard G. Horning, preceded her in death in 1990.

Helen was a graduate of the Boonsboro High School and had been an employee of the Savoy Restaurant in Hagerstown and also had worked at Fairchild Industries.

She was a member of the Brownsville Church of the Brethren in Brownsville, Maryland.

She devoted her life to her husband and children and she was a full time stay-at-home mom, who loved cooking and taking care of her family.  She was an amazing woman who in her later years faced many physical hardships and yet was ready to face each day and managed to smile each day.  This devoted wife, sister, mother, grandmother, and aunt will never be forgotten.

She is survived by one daughter, Karen P. Horning of Hagerstown; one son, Richard "Rusty" S. Horning and wife Sally of Williamsport, Maryland; two sisters, Pauline J. Coulter and Rose L. Myers, both of Hyattsville, Maryland who lovingly cared for Helen and had seen to her every need for many years; one brother, James W. Coulter of Yarrowsburg; two granddaughters, Savanah and Salina;  and many nieces and nephews.  She is also survived by her loving and caring niece Nicole Shrader, who was with her "Tink" whenever possible and helped take care of her, and her "Babydoll" Piper Shrader, and her faithful pets who gave her much joy, Kody and Kasey.

In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Mildred K. Constable and Rosalie M. Burger; and three brothers, Agustus M., Kenneth M. and Ronald L. Coulter.

A funeral ceremony will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, January 6, 2014 at the Brownsville Church of the Brethren, 1911 Rohrersville Road, Knoxville, Maryland.  Rev. Alan M. Smith will officiate.  Final resting place ceremonies will follow at the Brownsville Heights Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, January 5, 2014 at the Bast-Stauffer Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike, Boonsboro, as well as one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday.

Memorial Donations may be made to the Brownsville Church of the Brethren, 1911 Rohrersville Road, Knoxville, Maryland, 21758.
