Helen Eaves

August 26, 1920 — January 10, 2016

Mrs. Helen Elizabeth Sayler Eaves, 95, longtime Walkersville resident, died peacefully on Sunday, January 10, 2016 at her daughter's home. She was the loving wife of the late Walter "Goose" Eaves, who predeceased her in 1986.
Born  August 26, 1920 in Rocky Ridge, she was one of 11 children born to the late Charles Edward and Florence (Fisher) Sayler. Helen was very proud of the fact she was born on the day the 19th Amendment was added to the U.S. Constitution...the day women received the right to vote.
Helen was a graduate of Thurmont High School, class of 1937. Following graduation, she worked at Maryland School for the Deaf.  She and Goose married in 1939 and began life as dairy farmers in partnership with his parents. They moved to Walkersville in 1946.  Helen then worked at the sewing factory and became caregiver to both her mother and mother-in-law until their deaths. With the start of her own family in 1952, Helen worked locally at the bank, post office and school cafeteria, where she was known for her sticky buns and peanut butter fudge.
From 1963-1987, Mrs. Eaves, along with her husband, owned and operated Eaves Transportation. She was an Honorary Life Member of the Walkersville Fire Company, of where she enjoyed cooking for many of the dinners. She continued to cook soup for the fire company until last year at the age of 94. She was a very active and well-known volunteer in the Walkersville community. Additionally, Helen was a member of the Johnsville Seniors and the Rainbow Bells.
Mrs. Eaves was born and raised in the Graceham Moravian Church.  After moving to Walkersville she became a long and active member of the Methodist Church.
She is survived by a daughter, Suzan Thompson and husband, Lennie, of Walkersville; three grandchildren, Kiona Crum Black and husband, Christopher; Jacob Thompson; and Hannah Thompson and fiancé, Matthew Weeman; three great-grandsons, Wyatt, Nathan and Eaves Black; two siblings, David Sayler (Ruth), and Roy Sayler; and two sisters-in-law, Ruth Sayler (Calvin) and Margaret Sayler.
"Aunt Helen" is also survived by a vast number of nieces, nephews and their families.  She maintained a record of all of them, their spouses and descendents with their names and birthdates of each.  She is also survived by a host of friends and neighbors.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a daughter, Winona "Winnie" Crum; and eight siblings, Merhle Sayler, Harry Sayler, Raymond Sayler, Mary Jester, Mildred Brantner, Kathryn Beall, Calvin Sayler and Marguerite Martin.  She was the last surviving member of her Eaves' in-laws and their spouses.

The family wishes to thank Dr. John Shutta and staff for their care and concern during Helen's life.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, January 13, 2016 at Stauffer Funeral Home, 40 Fulton Ave., Walkersville, where a funeral service will begin at 11 a.m. on Thursday, January 14.

Private interment will be in Glade Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Walkersville Fire Co., 79 W. Frederick St., Walkersville, MD 21793; or to a charity of one's choice.
