Hazel Scott Smith, age 98, of Frederick, Maryland passed away on September 21, 2024. She was the wife of the late William (Smitty) Smith.
She was the daughter of the late Charles (Jack) Scott and Celia Turner Scott. Born in Westminster, South Carolina, Hazel was the eldest of three children.
She graduated Valedictorian from Basset High School in Basset, Virginia, where she had spent most of her childhood. She met her future husband while working for the War Department in Washington, D.C. As the wife of a career Marine, she raised two sons, Bill and Duffie. She loved her job at Camp Lejeune Paradise Point Sitting Service, where she served as director, bookkeeper, and most importantly, caregiver to thousands of children for over 40 years. She was best friends with her co-workers, and a loving substitute Mom to the children.
Hazel was a friend to so many military families over the years. Her heart, door and kitchen were always open to those in need. She gave loving care to her dogs, Beau, Suzy, and Amber, as well as to the wildlife that lived in her backyard.
While living in Jacksonville, North Carolina, she was an active and faithful member of Midville Baptist Church and Liberty Church. She was the first to welcome visitors to church. Edenton Retirement Community became her home in 2021. She Enjoyed the music activities, the church services and the loving residents and staff that surrounded her.
Hazel is survived by her devoted son, William Smith (Arlene), sister Carolyn Ausherman, loving grandchildren, Jessica Smith (Peter Humphrey) and Jeffrey Scott Smith (Rachel Smith), family friend, Pam Robinson, and beloved nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, Hazel is predeceased by her son, Edward Duffie Smith, and brother, Archie Scott.
Hazel's family will hold a celebration of life at Edenton Retirement Community on October 21, 2024 at 2 p.m. She will later be buried with her husband at Arlington National Cemetery.
