Hayden Boerum

July 31, 2007 — March 29, 2015

Master Hayden Finn Boerum, 7-year-old son of Melissa J. Golden and Michael P. Boerum of Frederick, died Sunday, March 29, 2015 at Children's National Medical Center in Washington, DC following complications from a bone marrow transplant.

Born July 31, 2007 in Frederick, Hayden was diagnosed at the age of 3 with Histiocytosis, a rare disease caused by over-production of white blood cells. Hayden had several procedures, numerous blood transfusions and chemotherapy, and in November of 2012, he underwent a double umbilical cord transplant.

Because of Hayden's upbeat, positive and courageous attitude with his battle against Histiocytosis, Hayden's Heroes, Inc., was created to raise awareness for Histiocytosis and to provide funding for research, education, and assistance to others suffering from this disease.

Hayden loved doing many things, and he greatly enjoyed playing with Legos and matchbox cars, trucks and trailers (anything with a hook), camping with his family and listening to his IPod. He was a second grader at Oakdale Elementary School and had a special teacher, Nancy Rasberry. According to his mother, Hayden was wise beyond his years and "had an old soul." His affectionate smile would make anyone laugh.

He was known as "Nurse Hayden" on the 4th floor of Children's hospital. Although he was unable to eat and enjoy food, he found great pleasure in having his nurses print pictures of his favorite foods, sometimes the silliest of things. He would color the pictures and decorate the walls of his hospital room with his works of art.

Hayden will be remembered by many friends and supporters. His family would like to thank the staff, nurses and doctors of 4 East - HemOnc/BMT at Children's hospital for the love, care and support given to Hayden during the last four years.

In addition to his parents, Hayden is survived by his sister, Morgan Boerum, of Frederick; his brother, Adlee Boerum of Frederick; his grandparents, Singy and Gary Golden of Frederick, and Michael and Melodye Boerum of Union Bridge; his aunts and uncles, GJ Golden and Audrey Windsor, Tammy and Danny Barnes, Jeff and Denise Golden, Tony and Sandy Golden, Erin Boerum and Tony Falati, Matthew and Mary Catherine Boerum, Emily Boerum and Derek DeRossett, and Melissa Boerum and Sean Espinoza; and his cousins, Danielle, JR, Caitlyn, Kyle, Markie, Mallory, Camden, Hunter, Tristen, Declan, Troy and Pierce.

Hayden will be greatly missed.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, April 6, 2015 at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick. In honor of Hayden, the family is asking those attending the visitation to wear Hayden's Heroes clothing or something in blue...as that was his favorite color.

A service celebrating Hayden's life will begin at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, April 7 from International Community Church, 123 Byte Dr, Frederick, MD 21702.

Interment will follow in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be Hayden's father, Michael P. Boerum; his grandfathers, Gary Golden and Michael H. Boerum; and his uncles, GJ Golden and Matt Boerum. Honorary bearers will be Hayden's brother, Adlee Boerum; and his cousin, Tristen Golden.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Hayden's Heroes, Inc. by visiting http://www.haydensheroesmd.org/donations.html.

Expressions of sympathy may be shared with the family at www.staufferfuneralhome.com.
