Harry "Jim" Hofrichter

August 21, 1943 — August 5, 2021

Harry James “Jim” Hofrichter, passed away unexpectedly at the age of 77, in his home in Adamstown, Maryland on August 5, 2021.
Jim was preceded in death by his wife Priscilla and parents Charles and Harriet.  He is survived by his sons, Brian (wife Laura) and Jeff; his grandchildren Rebecca, Alex (wife Elise) and Abigail, his great grandchildren Charlotte and Ethan, his sisters Barbara, Judith, and Virginia, and his nephew Nathan and family.  We are very fortunate and grateful that Jim was able to visit with all of his family in the past months during his annual vacations to Stowe, VT and Emerald Isle, NC where we made many happy memories hiking, swimming, building sandcastles and doing puzzles on the rainy days.
Jim was born in Buffalo, NY and grew up in Madison, CT where he attended Daniel Hand HS.  He attended Dartmouth College and obtained his PhD at the University of Oregon.  Jim brought his family to Maryland and spent his career as a highly respected and published researcher for the National Institutes of Health. He made significant contributions to the understanding of sickle cell disease and the study of protein folding kinetics.  His most recent project was in collaboration with the Gates Foundation seeking affordable gene-based cures for sickle cell.
Jim was an avid gardener and landscaper. He took great pride and spent countless hours creating and maintaining his fruit trees, vegetable gardens and flower beds.  He was a longtime resident and contributor to the Green Valley community of Frederick County, Maryland where he and Pris made many close and lasting friendships and chosen family.  He was a lifelong learner and enjoyed travel and spending time with his family.
A memorial service will be planned at a future date.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Frederick County Master Gardeners,
