Harry Shipe, Sr.

January 17, 1939 — July 5, 2022

Harry Shipe, Sr. of Mt. Airy, Maryland passed from this life on July 5, 2022 surrounded by his loving family and Nugget, his faithful dog.

Born January 17,1939 in Maryland he was the son of the late Melvin L. Shipe Sr. and stepmother Louise Shipe.

He was the loving husband of the late Barbara (Savoca) Shipe, his wife of 55 years, who passed in 2014.

A man of great faith, Mr. Shipe was a member of Difference Makers Church in Damascus, Maryland. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Pastor Clark.

Mr. Shipe owned and operated a successful construction company, Shipe Construction Company, for over 40 years. Upon his retirement from his company, he was employed by Accubid Construction until December 2021.

Mr. Shipe’s passion was auto racing. The pinnacle of his racing career was racing at the Daytona 500 in 1970. His love of racing continued to dirt track racing. As a race team owner he built many cars throughout the years. His love for racing was never ending. His most recent accomplishment was building a engine, weeks before his death, for his son, Harry Jr.s “00” car.

Mr. Shipe is survived by his three children, Harry Shipe, Jr. (Lisa) Frederick, Maryland, Donna Richards (Lloyd) Mt. Airy, Maryland, Susan Miller (Kenny) Damascus, Maryland. Half brothers, Kenny Shipe (Rita), Harold “Boo Boo” Shipe (Lisa), Ralph Wayne (Sharon), Doug Shipe (Tracy); half sisters, Nancy and Arlene Shipe; grandchildren, Amanda Von Egger (Chris) College Grove, TN., Candace St. Louis (Ben) Mt. Airy, Md., Mindy Miller (Pat) Nashville, TN., Harry Shipe lll (Katie) Mt. Airy, Md., Luke Richards (Morgan) Ijamsville, Md., Joe Richards Keymar, Md., Kendall-Sue Miller Johns Island, SC.; great-grandchildren, Lilllian, Ryan, Jake, Carson, Samantha, “Ricky Bobby”, Lucas, Leo and Weston. He will also be remembered by a special friend, Lounge Powell.

In addition to his wife, father and stepmother, Mr. Shipe was preceded in death by his brothers, Melvin Shipe Sr, Claude Shipe and half brother, Stanley Shipe.

Services are private with a celebration of life to be announced at a later date.

Memorial donations may be made to Automobile Racing Club of Hagerstown, a fund for local injured drivers.
