Mr. Harry “Smokey” Rudell Shelton, 91 of Frederick died on Wednesday, August 1, 2012.
Born June 24, 1921 in Walkersville, he was the son of the late George Albert and Elsie Virginia Burrier Shelton.
Smokey is survived by his sister, Edith Ella Shelton Bell of Baltimore, his brother, Herman Ira Shelton of Walkersville and many dear nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Celeste Virginia Crawford, and brothers, Earl George Shelton, Alvie Edward Shelton and Maynard William Shelton.
Smokey was a Private First Class in the United States Army, Company B, Dixie Division, 167th Infantry from 1942-1946. He was a Mortar Gunner stationed in the East Indies, New Guinea, South Philippines. He was decorated with the World War II Victory Ribbon, the Good Conduct Medal, the American Theater Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal and a Bronze Arrowhead.
Smokey worked at the Walkersville Canning Factory, the Walkersville Farmers Supply, the Pennsylvania Railroad, Cappello’s and Fogle’s Food Market.
Smokey loved playing sports, driving race cars, playing dominoes and listening to Gene Autry. He was a lifetime Boston red Sox fan. He was very generous and was cherished and well loved by all.
A Graveside service with Military Honors will be held on Saturday, August 11, 2012 at 10:00AM at Glade Cemetery in Walkersville. The Rev. John Schildt will be officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to any veteran's charity of ones choice in Smokey’s name.
