Harry Louis Leavy, 81, of Gaithersburg, MD passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, February 1, 2017 in his home. He was the loving husband of Zoe Deanna Leavy.
Born August 12, 1935 in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania he was the son of Peter and Ellen Leavy.
Harry attended the University of Maryland on a golf scholarship and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in History. Harry served in the United States Army from 1954-1957.
Harry was a retired banker who began his career working alongside one of the three presidential Federal Bank Board appointees. He then worked 9 years in various capacities for the Federal Home Bank Loan Board. And eventually became the President of United Federal Bank in Baltimore, USA Savings and Loan in Rockville, and American Federal Savings Bank in Rockville.
Harry enjoyed reading, sipping his gin and bitter lemon drink, and playing golf. Lots and lots of golf! He was an avid golfer and played every course he could including St. Andrews in Ireland.
As a longtime member of Montgomery Country Club, he held numerous Club Championships and hole-in-ones. He held both the title of Maryland Amateur State and Senior Maryland Amateur State Champion. Though 81 years young, he consistently shot many rounds of golf scoring in the 70s. One could always recognize Harry on the golf course wearing his "Gilligan's" hat.
In addition to his devoted wife Zoe, he is survived by his siblings Sallee and Pete. His children, Kimberly, Christopher, and Emma; and his grandchildren, Jack, Kaitlin, Megan, Jennifer, Ryan, and Hope Zoe.
The family will receive relatives and friends at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick, MD on Tuesday, February 7, 2016 from 4-7 pm. Inurnment at Arlington National Cemetery Columbarium at a later date.
