Harold Lee Henderson, of Woodbine, Maryland, passed away peacefully on Monday afternoon, May 5, 2014, one day after his 94th birthday, surrounded by his loving family.
Born on May 4, 1920 in High Point, North Carolina, he was the son of the late William and Florence Henderson. His wife, M. Evelyn Henderson, preceded him in death on April 19, 2006.
Harold was proud to be an American and was drafted into United States Army in 1944. He valiantly served his country in the European Theater, for which he received a Purple Heart.
Prior to the war, Harold met his soon-to-be wife, M. Evelyn Henderson, at a roller skating rink in Washington D.C. They would be known by many as quite the "skating couple." Harold and Evelyn married on May 30, 1940 at St. Paul's Rock Creek Episcopal Parish in Washington, D.C.
Harold's working career began with the Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Company in 1941. During his career, he worked as a liaison with the Goddard Space Flight Center and the White House, retiring as a manager in 1979, with thirty-eight years of dedicated service.
He was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Mt. Airy, Maryland. He was also a member of the William R. Singleton-Hope-Lebanon Masonic Lodge #7 of Washington, D.C., a lifelong member of Disabled American Veterans, Telephone Pioneers, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the American Legion.
He will be fondly remembered for his meticulous yard work, his love of all things related to the Washington Redskins Football team, and being an avid golfer.
Harold is survived by his daughter, Anna Evelyn Whitecotton and her husband, Joe, of Carbondale, Illinois; and his grandson, Scott Lee Whitecotton and his wife, Amy, of Chatham, Illinois.
A funeral ceremony will be held at 1:00 p.m., on Friday, May 9, 2014 at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 16457 Old Frederick Road, Mt. Airy, Maryland. The Rev. Susan S. Keller will officiate. Final resting-place ceremonies will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Suitland, Maryland, with military honors rendered by the Maryland National Guard (Army Branch).
Family will receive friends from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Friday, May 9, 2014 at the church.
