Gwendolyn Anita Johnson was born on June 21, 1937 to Gordon W. Branham and Anne M. Shuford Branham in Wayland, Kentucky. She was called from this life on January 6, 2018.
Raised and educated in the coal mining town of Wheelwright Kentucky, Gwen excelled in school, despite spending countless moments in the principal’s office for excessive talking. Gwen was a hard worker early in life taking on domestic jobs such as ironing and babysitting in her community. She graduated High School at the age of 16 and attended Kentucky State University. She left Kentucky to live in Baltimore, MD with her Aunt Ethel Northington, where she became a close part of their family. Gwen valued family and kept close ties with aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Gwen met her husband, Isaac L Johnson, Jr. at Kentucky State University and they were married on August 29, 1957. They spent the early years of their marriage in Baltimore and Annapolis MD, but also lived in New Hampshire, Michigan, Massachusetts, Florida, and most recently in Point of Rocks, MD. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in August 2017.
Gwen was raised in a Christian environment and later became an active member of several Pentecostal assemblies located in Jackson, MI, Worcester MA, Attleboro MA, Gainesville, FL and ljamsville, MD. Gwen was a dedicated prayer warrior and faithful intercessor, praying daily for family, leaders, saints, missionaries, and others on her prayer list. She was consistent in Bible study, reading through the Bible yearly. She had a heart for the house of God and her zeal for the things of God extended to righteous indignation at times. She was a firm advocate for what she believed was right.
A champion for education, Gwen taught in Anne Arundel County Maryland and Jackson, Michigan. She took additional courses at several colleges including Rivier College, Morgan State, and Bowie State. She also taught various Sunday School classes sharing with youth the value of being godly and dedicated to Jesus Christ.
Her marriage was blessed with four children: Isaac L. Johnson III (Margalie), Gwenitha L. Johnson, Reginald L. Johnson, and Terrell G. Johnson (Tara). It was further blessed with seven grandchildren on which she doted: Joel, Frankie, Isaac IV, Michael, Andrew, Daniel and Bethany Grace. She counted it a joy to know that each of her grands were baptized in the name of Jesus Christ and filled with the Holy Ghost.
Gwen loved to bake and quilt, blessing many with the works of her hands. She is well known for her ministry of encouragement through letters, cards, and calls.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, George Branham and Gordon Branham Jr., and a sister Corrie King. She leaves a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and other family members as well as dear friends.
