Gracie Wood

Mrs. Gracie L. Wood (Gregory) 87, of Frederick passed away on Sunday, July 31, 2011 at Homewood at Crumland Farms. She was the wife of Dr. George D. Wood, Sr. for 63 years.

Born on January 17, 1924 in Braxton County, West Virginia, Gracie was the daughter of the late Arlie Helmick and Clarence Gregory.

Gracie was predeceased by her four siblings: Forest, Patrick, twin sister Dacie and Mildred. She graduated from Burnsville High School in 1943. Her brother Forest was killed in Germany during WWII. She was employed in the Pentagon for ten years as a clerk in the U.S. Army National Guard. Gracie returned to the civilian work force in 1972. She was employed as a secretary in the U.S. Bureau of Standards at Germantown, MD. She retired December 2, 1988. Gracie has lived at Homewood at Crumland Farms since December 28, 2000 as an Alzheimer’s patient in the Willow Unit.

In addition to her husband she is survived by her daughters Linda Wood of Frederick, MD and Delores Katovitch and Deborah Wood of Syracuse, NY; son George D. Wood, Jr. and wife Elina of Columbia, MD; seven grandchildren Celie Katovitch, Jeremy, Timothy and Susan Lopez, Nelly Balkarova and George D. III and Alexander Wood.

A memorial service will be held Friday, August 5, 2011 at 10 AM at Homewood at Crumland Farms. Rev. Suzanne Morris and Rev. Esther Ziegler will officiate.
