Grace Francis McMullen Smith, 89, died Friday, September 25, 2015 at Glade Valley Rehabilitation and Nursing Center.
Mrs. Smith was born in Brooklyn, NY on November 10, 1925. She grew up in Queens, NY and graduated in January 1943 from John Adams High School, Ozone Park, NY. Mrs. Smith lived in Levittown, NY for 35 years and Port Charlotte, FL for 25 years before moving to Glade Valley in Walkersville, MD in Feb 2014.
She worked as a secretary for Hanover Insurance, NY. She was a homemaker who worked part-time for her family’s business and then as a bookkeeper for Singer Sewing Company and In and Outdoor Window Company.
Mrs. Smith was an active community volunteer for several organizations, including The Levittown Ancient Order of Hibernians Auxiliary, President from 1955-1958; American Legion Auxiliary 1964 – Present, holding various offices; a founding member and office holder of the Port Charlotte,FL Elks Ladies Auxiliary, 1989-2002. She served as a volunteer at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Pt. Charlotte, FL from 2002-2011.
Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John T. McMullen, her husband Robert E. Smith and her sisters, Jacquelyn Galloway and Alice Herringer.
She is survived by her daughters, Dr. Karen J. Smith of Falls Church, VA and Kim J. Smith of Frederick, MD and her son Donald J Smith and daughter-in-law, Susan; and grandchildren, Robert and Heather of Farmingdale, NY. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. In addition to family, Grace leaves behind many special people who were related by love.
A Funeral Mass for Mrs. Grace Smith will be celebrated 11 a.m.at St. Timothy’s Catholic Church in Walkersville, MD on Saturday, October 31, 2015. Interment will be private in Port Charlotte, FL where she will be laid to rest with her beloved husband of 54 years in the memorial gardens of her home parish, San Antonio Catholic Church.
