Gloria Newton

d. November 5, 2013

Gloria Jean Newton, 68, of Randallstown MD, peacefully entered into THE KINDOM of HEAVEN on Tuesday November 5, 2013. Born on February 24, 1945 in Norfolk Virginia, she was the daughter of the late John Jasper Boddie and Blanche Taylor Boddie-Perry. Gloria was married to Jerome Alexander Newton in 1968 at Morning Star Baptist Church in Baltimore MD and later divorced in 1978. Gloria was preceded in death by her two brothers Laurence “Larry” Donnell Boddie affectionately known as “Bo Mellow” and Carlton Tyrone Boddie affectionately known as “Boddie Boy”. Gloria is survived by her sister, the oldest of the four children of John and Blanche, Evelyn “Kaye” Greene who has been happily married to William Alfred Greene Jr for 51 years and her sister in law Felicia “Diane” Boddie . Gloria is also survived by her only child Derek Omar newton, Sr., her daughter in law Heather Leih Newton and her four grandchildren Derek Omar newton, Jr. (12), Julian Alexander Newton (9), jaiden Nicole Newton (8) and Matthew Xavier Newton (6) and her nephews Darren Nikita “Nick” Greene, Keedrick Wilkins ,Mitchell Lee Wilkins and her niece Rosalyn Armstrong as well as a host of other cousins

Gloria graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in Rocky Mount North Carolina in 1963. Immediately after graduating high school she attended North Carolina Weslyn for one year and then moved to Baltimore Maryland with her Father John Jasper and her cousin Milton Boddie where she attended and graduated from Coppin State College with her Master’s in Education. For over 30 years Gloria served her community as a teacher or a principal. She taught at several schools, to name a few Woodmoor Elementary, Scotts Level Middle, Scotts Branch Elementary and owings Mills Elementary.

Gloria, affectionately known to most as “Ms. Gloria” was well loved and respected in the neighborhood. All of the children in the neighborhood knew to be on their best behavior in her presence and often times having to show her their report card before being allowed to come in and play with Derek. She tutored several neighborhood children and only asked for a smile and good grades as payment. Ms. Gloria was truly devoted to her son Derek. So much so that in the mid 80’s while she had been studying for her PHD and only needed to take the final exam, she chose to skip the final exam so she could take her son to his baseball game and film the game as she always had done. When asked why she never rescheduled the test after putting in so many hours her response was something like this “ I know I know the info, I aced all the other tests, I’d have aced that one too but I can’t get a rewind on spending time with my baby”.

Gloria was a devout Christian and a member of Christian Life Baptist Church in Baltimore Maryland on Liberty Rd from 1987 until she took ill in 2003. Gloria served the LORD with every fiber of her being. The LORD was her passion and the WORD was her food. Though she will be missed by many she will NEVER BE FORGOTTEN. Those that know the battle she fought know she fought to the end but now she has everlasting peace and her mind and body have been fully restored. So with that and in accordance with “Ms. Gloria”, “Jean” or as her son Derek affectionately refers to her “MAMA” wanted we will celebrate her life, cherish the memories and worry no more because now she is FREE.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday, November 10th at 4:00PM at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick. The family will be present to receive friends one hour prior to service time. Services will be officiated by Rev. Ronnie Henry.
