Gloria A. Mickelsen, 87 of Middletown, MD, passed away on November 29, 2016.
Born August 19, 1929 in Adams, MA and was the daughter of Marshall O. and Hazel Shaw Potter.
Gloria's mother died when she was three and her aunt, M. Agnes Potter assumed the responsibility of raising Gloria and her brother, Marshall O. Potter, Jr. until they were adults. Gloria spoke often of her fond memories of Ag who remained a very important person throughout her life.
She graduated from the former Adams High School in 1947. Gloria then graduated from nursing school at Lawrence General Hospital Nursing School in MA. and achieved her Registered Nurse certification in 1950. Gloria worked as a RN at Lawrence General Hospital and C.T. Plunkett Hospital in Adams. She also served as a nurse in the Army at Ft. Carson, CO during the Korean War. Over the next 50 years she worked as an RN throughout various parts of the country before retiring.
After retiring from nursing, Gloria volunteered at a local nursing home near her home in Middletown, MD administering care to the elderly. In addition she volunteered at the Women's Auxiliary and stayed active well into her mid 80's.
Gloria was an avid reader who in particular enjoyed mystery novels. As an animal lover, she gave a wonderful home to many dogs and cats over the years.
Gloria is survived by three children, Lynn Wolf, Susan McQuade and Douglas Mickelsen and her brother Marshall, half-sister, Irene and half-brother John. Besides her children, she leaves her grandchildren, Sarah, Lisa, Andrea, Kaitlyn and Frankie. In addition she leaves nine great-grandchildren. Gloria cherished times spent with her family especially on the holidays.
The family will receive friends from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. on Tuesday, December 13, 2016 at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike Frederick, MD 21702. Funeral services will take place Wednesday, December 14, 2016 at 11:00 a.m.
Burial will take place at the Bellevue Cemetery in Adams, Massachusetts on December 16, 2016 at 11:00 a.m.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations are suggested in Gloria’s memory through the funeral home to the American Red Cross or Frederick County Humane Society.
