Glenn Fogle

Mr. Glenn H. “Hot Dog” Fogle, 84, of Walkersville, passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, October 5, 2010. He was predeceased in 2008 by his wife of 50 years, Dorothy J. (Esworthy) Fogle.
Born on January 7, 1926, he was the son of the late Eugene & Emma (Fox) Fogle. He was born and raised on the family farm on Dublin Road in Woodsboro, the youngest of 11 children. Up until 1969, the farm was owned by the Fogle family since 1729 when Glenn’s ancestor, Andrew Fogle came to America from Germany. The oldest tree in Frederick County was on this property until it was struck by lightning last month. Glenn was the last remaining member of his family.
Glenn served in Europe during World War II from 1944-1946. He was in the 310
th
Infantry, the 78
th
Lightning Division, L Company. He participated in numerous major combat missions during the winter of 1945 at the Battle of the Bulge. His unit crossed the Siegfried Line, marched through the Ardennes, liberated Rietenbach, Germany and other small villages as they advanced to eventually liberate Berlin. Upon his return from the war, he built his home on Charles Street where he lived until the time of his death. He was the last “original” resident of the neighborhood.
In November of 1946 he established Glenn H. Fogle & Sons Electric Service. He actively worked with the company, now owned and operated by his son, Jim Fogle until the very end of his life. Glenn H. Fogle and Sons Electric Service holds the oldest Electrical License in Frederick County still in operation…#38! Glenn had many accomplishments with his business. He was proud to say that he had worked in nearly every house in the “old town” of Walkersville. He was the electrical contractor for many of the Walkersville civic projects. He worked at Farmer’s Supply in Walkersville for 10 years. He did all of the electrical wiring of the mill, including the construction of the tall grain tower at the new mill in the 1970’s.
Glenn retired after 25 years from C&P Telephone Company in 1977.
Glenn was very active and well known in the community. He was a Life Member of the Lewistown Social Club, the Jefferson Patriotic Club, and the Walkersville Volunteer Fire Company. He worked in the “pop tent” at the Walkersville carnival each year for decades. He was also a member of the Woodsboro American Legion, Glenn W. Eyler Post 282, Amvets, Post 2, the Owls Club, and the Redman’s Club.
“Hot Dog” was one of a kind, full of personality…if you knew him, you definitely would agree! He was interesting, funny, and unique. A family quote was, “They don’t make men like him anymore!” Glenn Fogle was a very hard working man all of his life. He loved time spent with his children, grandchildren, friends and family. He especially loved to drive his grandson James to and from school everyday! He raised beef cattle for many years, loved to fish, and used to enjoy riding his motorcycle. He was well loved by many and will be missed by all.
After the death of his wife Dorothy in 2008, Glenn was blessed with a very special and beloved companion, Jackie Duperron. She cared for him and was a dear friend to him and the entire family. They shared many happy hours together going to the Walkersville Senior Center, sitting on the front porch, feeding the birds, watching the squirrels and talking to the neighbors.
He is survived by his children Glenn H. Fogle Jr. and his wife Cheryl of Saratoga Springs, NY, Bonnie Nash and her husband Courtney of Frederick, Jacquelynn Dvorak and her husband Donald, James T. Fogle and his wife Donna, and adopted daughter Sharon Robbins all of Walkersville. Six grandchildren: Glenn H. Fogle III and wife Tirza, Sarah Fogle, Natasha Nash, Joe Dvorak and wife Christine, (who would have given Glenn his first great-grandson next month,) Jacob Dvorak and James Dvorak. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family will receive friends on Monday, October 11th, from 7-9pm and also Tuesday, October 12
th
from 10-11am at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 40 Fulton Avenue, Walkersville where funeral services will be held on Tuesday, October 12
th
at 11am. His beloved son in law, Brother Don Dvorak will officiate. Interment will be in Glade Cemetery, Walkersville. Pallbearers will be Glenn H. Fogle III, Joe Dvorak, Jacob Dvorak, James Dvorak, Michael Robbins, and Sharon Robbins.
