Mrs. Gladys Hogston of Frederick died on Wednesday, March 22, 2017, after a brief illness. She was 88 years old.
Born on April 11, 1928, in Saltville, Virginia, she was the daughter of Susie and Harry Doane and the oldest of six children with three sisters and two brothers. Gladys moved to the Rockville-Gaithersburg area in 1950, with her husband Lawrence Hogston in search of a better life for their two young daughters.
Long before it became fashionable for women to have a career, Gladys was a working mother who through hard work and tenacity became the owner of Tres Chic Hairstyling, one of the largest hair salons in Montgomery County in the 1970’s and 1980’s. Tres Chic was located in the original Super Giant Shopping Center on Rockville Pike. Throughout those years, Gladys worked hard to transform her life in the tradition of her Appalachian roots, always striving to make a better life while, never forgetting where she was from. She was an independent, strong, loving and generous woman who devoted her time and energy to extended family and the friends she met along the way.
In 1988 she retired to Frederick and lived in the Baker Park area on Carroll Parkway before moving to Whittier and then later to Homewood at Crumland Farms. Never idle, she filled her retirement by volunteering at the Citizens Nursing Home Auxiliary where she was in charge of the gift shop for many years. She also supported the Auxiliary in various fundraising activities. She was a member of the Gambrill Park Homemakers Club and particularly enjoyed her Birthday Group where she made many friends.
Gladys is survived by her two daughters both of Frederick, Margaret Paton and Brenda Benna and husband Carl; Grandson Michael Kidwell and wife Gina and their two children Ian and Samantha of North Potomac; Granddaughter Burgess Pilch, husband Mike and their children Grace and Isaac; Grandson Brad Benna, wife Tosha and their three children Tillman, Madigan and Ada all of Frederick.
She will be remembered by her loving brother Bob Doane and her sister in law Ellen and their children Jessica Study and Amy Neubarer and their families. Theirs was a lifelong relationship of love and support.
She is also survived by sister Mary Costello, nephews Chuck Costello, Larry Costello and niece Suzanne Diehl; her youngest brother Tony Doane and wife Darlene and many other nieces and nephews including Clay Miller and Thomas Miller.
Gladys was proceeded in death by her sisters Ruth Lacy and Fay Taylor.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 pm on Sunday, March 26 at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick. Funeral services will be held on Monday, March 27 at 10 am at the funeral home. Interment will be at Mt Olivet Cemetery immediately following the service.
