Mr. Gilbert W. Toth, 55, of Mount Airy, died suddenly of a heart attack on Saturday, October 4, 2008 at Frederick Memorial Hospital. He leaves behind his wife, Jill Williams, and son Garrett Toth-Williams.
Gil was born on July 11, 1953 in Takoma Park, Maryland. He was the son of Rosanna M. Toth and the late Joseph R. Toth. He was raised in Silver Spring, Maryland.
Following his graduation from the University of Maryland at College Park with a B.S. in education, Gil taught industrial arts and automotives at high schools in Montgomery County and Southern Maryland for several years. He joined the IBM Corporation in 1978 and over nineteen years with IBM he worked as a customer engineer, Systems Center representative and market analyst. During that time he completed a second B.S. at University of Maryland University College in computer science. After leaving IBM he worked as a consultant for various firms until he joined the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE). At MSDE he was a data processing analyst doing Oracle application development for the Division of Accountability and Assessment.
Gil was a consummate jack-of-all-trades. He restored antique furniture, old sports cars, a couple of stained glass windows and even a player piano. On the construction of their last house he did all the electrical and plumbing work and most of the interior finishing with his wife and he extensively remodeled all his previous homes. Gil felt compelled to tinker with things and was unafraid to disassemble anything and put it together again better than ever. He was the go-to man in the family if you needed anything installed or repaired. Gil had an off-beat sense of humor and found endless opportunities for amusement in everyday life. He was a good but messy cook. One of Gil's greatest joys was spending time with his son Garrett, of whom he was very proud.
In addition to his mother, wife and son, other survivors include his 113 year-old grandmother Catherine Hagel of New Hope, Minnesota; sister M. Rosanne Toth of Bel Air, Maryland; sister Mercedes Shields and her husband Edward of St. Francisville, Louisana; and brother Leon Toth and his wife Careen of Potomac, Maryland. He was predeceased by his brother Gerard Toth, whose wife Martha still resides in Belleville, Michigan. Gil will also be greatly missed by his wife's family and his numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
