Gilbert Edgar Lee was born on May 1, 1930, in Hopehill, Frederick County, MD. He was the sixth child of the late Joseph Roger Lee and Jennie Calverta Weedon Lee.
Gilbert "Gil" attended elementary school at Hopehill until the 7th grade. Gil attended a few years at Lincoln High School in Frederick, Md. His first employment was working on farms. He began working at the Brick Yard in Buckeystown at sixteen years of age. Gil went to work in Washington, DC in the Water Division when he became eighteen.
At twenty-one, he was enlisted into the United States Marine Corps in Quantico, VA. Gil was the first African American in Frederick County to serve in the U.S. Marine Corps. He served actively for two years. He continued his military service for six years in the Reserves. Gil then held employment in Baltimore until 1959. His last employment was at Atomic Energy in Germantown where he worked for twenty-eight years before retiring on disability in 1982.
Gil was a devoted Christian and lifelong dedicated member of Hopehill United Methodist Church.
Gil spent most of his years living on the family farm which he loved. He spent many evenings sitting on the front porch listening to the baseball games on the radio and waving at the cars that passed by. Gil enjoyed fishing, searching for field greens, cooking, playing cards, and just driving around the countryside and making stops to visit with friends over a cold beer.
