Mrs. Gertrude V. Monahan, 84, of Frederick, died on Tuesday, February 24, 2009, at Glade Valley Nursing Center, Walkersville. She was the wife of the late James E. Monahan who died on August 21, 1991.
Born on August 21, 1924, in Prince Georges County she was the daughter of the late Edward F. and Rose E. Alvey.
She was a 1938 graduate of St. James Catholic School in Mt. Rainier and a 1942 graduate of Bladensburg High School. Gertrude was a Registration clerk for Leland Memorial Hospital in Riverdale, MD. She was an avid Washington Redskins fan, enjoyed reading, doing cross word puzzles and she never missed an episode of Wheel of Fortune.
Surviving are 6 children: James T. Monahan and wife Fritzi of Cheverly, Michael P. Monahan and wife Bunny of Beaufort, SC, Kevin A. Monahan and wife Terri of Conway, SC, Julia A. Moseley and husband Carl of Mechanicville, MD, Mary K. Jenkins and husband Drew of Hillsborough, NC, and Margaret R. Collins and husband Mark of Keedysville; 20 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren.
Mrs. Monahan was preceded in death by 4 brothers and a sister.
Visitation: The family will receive friends from 7-9 PM on Monday, March 2, at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike Frederick.
Services: Additional services and inurnment will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, March 3, at Cheltenham Veteran's Cemetery, 11301 Crain Highway, Cheltenham, MD.
