Gerald Edwin Moylan, 90, of Washington D.C., passed away peacefully on Friday, February 10, 2017. He is predeceased by his loving wife of 63 years, Martha Ann Guyette Moylan who passed away on February 19, 2015, his brother Robert Francis Moylan who passed away on September 10, 2014, and his sister-in-law Mili Moylan, who passed away on January 3, 2009. He was the son of the late Honorable Cornelius A. Moylan and Anne (Durkin) Moylan.
He was born on November 19, 1926, in Hartford, Connecticut. Gerald briefly attended Buckley High School, then attended and graduated from Blair Academy. He was called to duty for the U.S. Navy in 1945, and served in active duty during World War II aboard the USS LST 127 with the rank of QMS3. He was honorably discharged in July 1946. He attended Yale University commencing 1946 and graduating in 1950. He was called into service again for the Korean War and subsequently honorably discharged. He received a WWII Victory medal and an American Area Medal. After serving in the U.S. Navy, Gerald enjoyed a long career employed by the Library of Congress.
Gerald met and married the love of his life, Martha Ann Guyette Moylan in 1952. They loved to travel and enjoyed time in Mexico, Paris and Ireland. They also spent many summers camping and exploring nature in Acadia National Forest and New England. He was an avid bird watcher and loved kayaking. He loved reading the Irish poets, and was very proud of his Irish heritage. He was an Irish scholar as well. He also loved listening to classical music, jazz and especially John McCormack. He often spoke of wonderful memories of childhood times spent at Old Lyme Shores, Connecticut.
Gerald is survived by his brother Cornelius A. Moylan (Mili) of West Hartford, Connecticut, his sister Muriel (Moylan) Nevens of Delmar, New York, his brother Richard D. Moylan (Martha) of Georgetown, Massachusetts and his sister-in-law Carol (Neumeister) Moylan (Robert) of West Hartford, Connecticut. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews who will miss him dearly.
Gerald is survived by his nephew Michael Fried and wife Vicki and family, with whom he became very close during the last year. The Moylan family wishes specifically to thank Mike, who aided Gerald through his last year of life, with a great deal of love, compassion, grace and dignity. Gerald loved spending time with him, and was most certainly uplifted by their deep close friendship.
The family also wishes to thank Shari, Carrie and the staff at his place of residence in D.C., Sister MaryAnne Smith, and Tamora and Pete Papas for their friendships, as well as the staff at Glade Valley Center, Maryland for their care and compassion.
