George Richard Bucheimer, Sr.

June 7, 1928 — August 12, 2017

George Richard “Dick” Bucheimer Sr., 89 years young, of Frederick, Md., departed this earth on Saturday, August 12, 2017. He was the son of the late John Maurice Bucheimer and Mary Ethel  Beachum Bucheimer.  He was born in Baltimore, Maryland on June 7, 1928. Later, the family moved to the Ruxton area of Towson where he spent his formative years. He graduated from McDonogh School in June of 1945, a military academy at that time, where he was active in the Cavalry Corps. Following high school, he continued his studies at Dickinson College, earning his Bachelor’s Degree.

Following college, he began working in the family business, J. M. Bucheimer Co., Leather Goods, where upon his father’s death, he became the President in 1953. He over saw the relocation of the business to Frederick, Md. in 1956 and eventually it’s expansion to Los Angeles, Ca., Cameron, WV.  and  St. Catherine’s, Canada. In its hey-day the company supplied 30 % of State Police forces in the country with “Sam Brown” Belts, hunters and shooters nationwide with holsters and gun cases, and Hollywood with holsters  for detective movies  and westerns, including Dirty Harry and Blue Bloods. He served in the Maryland National Guard as a 2nd Lieutenant earning  expert marksman. He was a long-time member of the First Baptist Church of Frederick, where he sang in the choir, men’s quartet and directed many Christmas Plays. He had many interests and passions including music and theatre, flying, shooting, boating and model trains.

Dick was active in the Frederick community, serving terms on the Board of Directors of the Frederick YMCA and Frederick County National Bank. He was a past president of the Rotary Club of Frederick and past president of the Fredericktowne Players, where he was active for many years both on stage and behind the scenes.

Above all, he was the proud and loving patriarch of a large family.

He was preceded in death by his brother, John M.; sisters, Ethel and Ruth; his first wife, Claire Nannette Baker Bucheimer Hillman; his second wife, Patricia Anne Bruening Bucheimer and great granddaughter, Lilly Hilliard.

He is survived by his children, G. Richard Jr. and  wife Ellen, of Frederick,  David and wife Lisa of Braddock Heights, Robert and wife Aleja of Braddock,  Christine Allen of Middletown, Maria De Vries of New York City, N.Y., Dr. Natalie Collins and  husband Chris of Boston, Mass. and Dr. Elaine Cagnina and  husband Shawn, of Charlottesville, Va. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren, George Bucheimer III, Kayla Bucheimer,  Mark Bucheimer, Jaclyn Bucheimer and her husband, MSgt., USAF Eric Hilliard, Phil Bucheimer, Dan Flohr and wife Brittany, Alonna Bucheimer, Alexandra Allen, Will Allen, Laurel Collins, Evan Collins, Jacob Cagnina, Peter Cagnina, Connor Cagnina and Marin Cagnina; great grand children, Grayson Hilliard, Liam Hilliard, and Ava Grace Hilliard,  niece, Joan Rauschenberger and husband Chris; nephew, John M. Bucheimer, III and  wife Patricia and their families.

The family will receive friends on Friday, August 18, 2017 from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick, MD 21702.  A celebration of Dick’s life will be held at First Baptist Church, 7040 Bowers Road, Frederick, MD 21702 on Saturday, August 19, 2017 at 11:00 a.m.  Interment will follow at Christ Reformed Church Cemetery, Middletown, MD.

Memorial Contributions may be made in his name to First Baptist Church or the Wounded Warrior Project.
