George Conklin James {Reds} Spurrier

Mr. George Conklin James Reds Spurrier, 91, of Frederick died on Friday, June 8, 2007 at Golden Living Center, Frederick. He was husband of the late Margaret Virginia Biddinger Spurrier who died in 1991.

Born on September 5, 1915, in Frederick, he was the son of the late Roscoe Conklin and Mary Agnes Layman Spurrier. He was a heavy equipment operator for 21 years with T.M. Viers & Son, retiring in 1980. He served in the U.S. Army infantry during WWII and was a member of the Maryland National Guard's 29th Division for 6 years. He took part in the D-Day invasion at Normandy and was wounded in action three times while serving in France and Germany. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal, Distinguished Unit Badge, American Defense Service Ribbon and European-African-Middle Eastern Service Ribbon.

Mr. Spurrier was a member of Parkway Community Church of God where he served as a deacon for several years.

Mr. Spurrier was preceded in death by his step-daughter, Betty Hoffman; and his two brothers, S.W. Ralph Spurrier and Willis Melvin Ray Spurrier.

He is survived by son-in-law, Harold Hoffman of Mt. Airy; a sister-in-law, Lois Spurrier, of Frederick; and a niece, Janet Spurrier of Frederick. He is fondly remembered by several friends including Dave & Judy Meador & their daughters, Vicki Harris, Juli Butler & Jennifer Nagy; Paul & Daynah Cataldo and children, Aaron & Hannah; Jim & Gretta Triesler and children, Tiffany & Chad; Louise Kern; Lois Palmer; and Marvin Wilke.

He is also remembered by many of the staff persons at Golden Living Center (formerly Beverly Healthcare Frederick) where he resided the past seven years.

Services: A graveside service with military honors and moments of remembrance will be conducted at 10:00 AM on Saturday, June 16, at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Frederick, with Rev. Dave Meador officiating. Friends are invited to pay respects at the grave site.
