George Vanfossen
October 18, 1921 — December 3, 2010
Mr. George E. VanFossen, 89, of Frederick, MD, died Friday, December 3, 2010 at Frederick Memorial Hospital. He was a lifelong resident of Frederick, most recently at Somerford House. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Catherine L. VanFossen. Born October 18, 1921, he was the son of the late Eldred W. and Elizabeth Remley VanFossen.
Mr. VanFossen proudly served in the U.S. Navy during WWII on a mine sweeper patrolling the East coast of the United States. George was a lifelong member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Frederick, where he served many years as Treasurer and was a Sunday school teacher. George was a life member of FSK American Legion Post 11. He was Commander from 1953-1954 and a member of the Last Man's Club. George worked for many years at Better Homes Equipment Co. before serving as Secretary-Treasurer of Routzahn's for a number of years. He then spent twelve years as Treasurer of Hiltner's Furniture Store before retiring in 1987. George enjoyed traveling with his wife Catherine. In his younger years he participated in many sports and was always an avid sports fan. In retirement he enjoyed watching sports on TV, gardening and spending time with his family.
Mr. VanFossen is survived by his daughter Linda Cleveland and husband Bill of Frederick; his son George E. VanFossen, Jr. and fiance Gloria Crutchfield of Florida; granddaughter Lori Dembeck of Walkersville; great-granddaughters Brooke Molesworth of Frederick and McKenzie Ortiz of Wheaton; brother James VanFossen and sisters Dolores Hall, Elizabeth Lambdin and Cecelia Boller.
He was preceded in death by a brother Eldred VanFossen and his beloved granddaughter Shelly Molesworth Ramirez.
The family will receive friends at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick on Wednesday, December 8, 2010, from 5 to 8pm, which will include a memorial service at 7pm, with Pastor Phil Fogarty officiating. Interment will be private.
